What social class would you put yourself in? Me, I'm dole dodging scum class.
Economy class 😐
Middle.
Top of the...
working
Are we talking actual class (ie, middle class folk earn around £25k), or strange British perception of class (middle class folk earn £50k and send Jemima and Tarquin to private school)?
cattle
Business
tron - you give us a definition.
Well, like I said, middle class folk tend to be in the middle income bracket - the sociologists and demographers will argue where one class ends and the other begins.
I reckon the average middle class person in the UK will tell you they're working class. It's only the upper middle class that'll think about admitting to it, and then only if they're not Guardian readers 😆
Lower.
Is class simply defined by income or by education/intelligence and or background?
Top.
I am middle middle.

I always thought it was about level of education, and profession, rather than income. David Beckham is hardly middle class. Doctors, Teachers, Lawyers, etc = Middle Class. Of course some professions are pretty specialist and don't require high level qualifications, yet still command large salaries, but I suppose anything that requires a fair amount of specialist training/study/skill could be considered a Middle Class profession, whereas something that doesn't could be considered Working Class. Progression to high level within an industry could elevate the person to Middle Class status as well; you could in theory progress from shelf-stacker to managerial level, but you would need to possess particular skills and abilities to do so in a very competitive environment.
Is class simply defined by income or by education/intelligence and or background?
Nope, it's defined by the number of different pasta types you have in your cupboard.
Additional middle class identifiers include...
Anchovies
Capers
More than one type of olive oil
Olives
Organic alternatives
Proper coffee
Pure.
Probably middle / upper in terms of education, background etc. Scum of the earth in terms of current income 😆
Middle.
Privately educated, Durham university, graduate job. First pressing extra virgin olive oil and cous cous in the cupboard.
ffs Effin, if you want to look that deeply into it, then check out this :
David Beckham is hardly middle class.
You're right. He's almost up there with the tax dodging super rich elite 😆
Heh! Flasheart, TJ and me! 😀
+1 for economy class , 🙂 middle class wage, working class job, upper class thriftiness

Don if you have some organic cous cous, you're firmly in the middle!
Don if you have some organic cous cous, you're firmly in the middle!
Couscous yes, organic no!
I usede to hang around in circles where the first question upon meeting someone new was "What school did you go to?"
That was a fun one for me.
Effin, despite repeatedly posting on this thread, you still haven't stated what social class you would put yourself in.
Just admit it mate ........... you ain't got no class 😐
Gutter class lol
Ok then.
Public School/Uniservity education
Love of Classical Music and Art
Associate with Lawyers, Teachers, Doctors, Judges, Religious Ministers

Taking the piss out of men who like to dress as ladies Effin ?
You insensitive bash-turd 😐
according to my education.. upbringing.. income and prospects.. firmly underclass..
It's very simple...
If, when eating, you hold your knife as if it were a pen then you're working class. 😉
Background - middle.
Education - middle.
Profession - working.
Income - please define as the word's unknown presently.
Taking the piss out of men who like to dress as ladies Effin ?
No, just you.
Hairy, you , middle class??? 😯
Level 60 Paladin
3rd Class
What is this 'class' you refer to?
I am social mobility in motion. Born in a teesside estate, now pulling in 6 figures living in West London.
😉
First class!
Elfinsafety - MemberTaking the piss out of men who like to dress as ladies Effin ?
"No, just you".
You posted a pic of a well-known comic character who's entire "humour" is based on humiliating, ridiculing, and poking fun, at cross dressers.
Life can be challenging enough for trannies, without that sort of puerile and childish "humour" 😐

Ok then I'm a racist.
djglover - Member .......... proving that one thing money can't buy is class 😆
Class is supposedly determined by parents occupation.Well it was when I was 'reading' Sociology' almost a quarter of a century ago.
No doubt debunked by the 80s and onwards upward mobility thang.
It's not income per se as that is more of a norm thing governed by others in relation to yourself [pound notes in the bank per month-wise]
Just because you are in the average income bracket doesn't define your belief system, background, peer allegiance, aspirations, where you chose to spend your pennies and so on [and just as importantly ,where you chose NOT to spend your pennies or frequent]
It's more a self imposed mindset rather than a label, bracket or norm that you may conform too as those are extrinsic factors.
Class is more intrinsic.
Or perhaps its a fluid blend of the two...
Who cares anyway.
Class? Hmm, a tough one. If you define class merely by some form of snobbery, then yes it is defined by one's parent's occupation. However, if you define class as that immutable quality wherein a person has a character, intellect or demeanour which is worthy of note, then class isn't merely about some shallow view of wealth, upbringing, education or location.
Iz it coz I iz posh?
after that stern dressing down... I should probably add.. taste.. lifestyle.. social circle.. accent.. and prejudices to my earlier list..
Iz it coz I iz posh?
No, it iz becoz you is broke. 😉
The only real indicator of what class you are is a predilection for hummus.
Def not about income - I earn about 10k a year currently but am as middle class as they come. Sometimes I even make my own hummus. 😉
We have a house in Islington where we mix in arts / media and film making circles and a flat in Stockport where we mix in milkman, careworker and car mechanic circles, and we don't eat cous cous or drink niche beers, I do have lots of different types of oil, not just olive for cooking with and I make my own butter. I have no idea what that all means though.
I knew I was in a middle class area the other day, when I stepped in some hummus salad. Round my way if would be a kebab or a dead rat.
I am at the poorest underachieving end of the otherwise 'oxbridge educated and funny vowel sounds' English side of my family, and so I can speak upper/middle to posh folk and happlily converse in the trashiest janner to everyone I went to (local secondary) school with. My little sister also delights in her 'sliding' accents: she is also able to do hertfirdshire/bucks as well. 😆
I earn well below the national average wage but I've graduated from university twice and do a job which I couldn't and wouldn't be considered for if I hadn't done so.
I like Proust, absurdist theatre and I LOOOOVE pot noodles and burger king.
As the direct reverse to my Oxbridge dad, I know loads about ale and like proper old fashioned pubs a lot, but know crap-all about wine and have never spent more than £6 on a bottle.
I am rubbish at cricket, never ever played rugby, not bad at football, ok at darts, quite good at pool and awesome at pétanque (proper working class 'where's me whippet' game for french men with bellies).
I read newspapers for the standard of journalism rather than the political leanings but I will poke my own eyes out before I vote conservative.
I suspect this all still plonks me pretty squarely in the middle of middle class though.

Nouveau riche?
Nouveau pauvre?
A show-off?

See, that's class.
Simply using the word "class" denotes a considerable lack of it 🙂
"The English alway confuse good manners and tailoring, with integrity and breeding"
I can still remember when the corner shop on our estate got a jar of dried mixed herbs in. My mum brought it, and on that day we became one of the posh families. For round there anyway.
Class is supposedly determined by parents occupation.Well it was when I was 'reading' Sociology' almost a quarter of a century ago.
ok then.
while my parents are now retired, my dad was a builder, my mum a secretary & my stepdad a sales rep, later a civil servant.
independant school & university educated, but no letters after my name (got bored, dropped out); IT "professional" since 1988. drive a Saab, previously a BMW, estate car, live in a "middle class" area in a 3 bed semi
but I think the biggest clue is when I fly, I fly economy class. so there.
I'm economy class
Elfinsafety - MemberI knew I was in a middle class area the other day, when I stepped in some hummus salad. Round my way if would be a kebab or a dead rat.
Don't you have any Middle Eastern/Mediterranean types living in your area then ?
As it happens I was walking through Croydon North End this afternoon, a rather rough and bustling part of town. And I distinctly remember saying to myself "North End is truly under Islamic/Turkish control" .......with all it's halal shops spilling onto the pavements, squalor, and nearby mosque, it really does look like a town in a third world country.
You could easily step on some hummus there. Or a dead rat.
"You could easily step on some hummus there. Or a dead rat."
Or a hummus stuffed dead rat?
they do a lush houmous kebab in the shop down our road.. cheaper than greasy meaty kebabs too.. om nom nomnom
I like humous, but I like to scoop it out of the pot with my little finger or some t-bone steak flavour roysters. Sorry, proper humous-eaters. 😳
[edit] I reckon if you don't know what Roysters are then you are definitely upper middle class plus.
Not a clue. Brought up on a council estate, Dad was a miner, Mam was an enrolled nurse. Secondary Modern school education, Did loads of jobs including labouring on building sites, warehouse work, miner. Did my nurse training after the 84 strike, married a right posh bird from Cambridge (and believe me, that's the only reason you'll find sun dried tomatoes and olives in my cupboards), and now we're on a combined income of about seventy grand a year. I have been known to go the theatre, I like some opera and classical music, but I still listen to the music I grew up with (northern soul, punk, rockabilly). I'm well read, but prefer Stephen King to the classics. I'm well travelled, and feel comfortable in any social setting. I have always considered myself working class, and can freely admit to being a little chippy about it at times, but feel it's a bit of an outdated concept these days.
barnsleymitch - MemberNot a clue.
Well judging by your résumé........"class traitor" would sum it up I reckon.
My butler is typing this on my behalf.
"class traitor" would sum it up I reckon.
I work in Barnsley. That's fighting talk
"My butler is typing this on my behalf."
I've not got my glasses on and thought that said "butter" I was quite bemused by that.
Of my own.
How can crispy bacon state he is cattle class? He's telling us a porker here 😆

What's your point?
What do middle class Turks eat?
I have no idea as to the nationality of the residents of the area I was in, and neither did I see and '3rd World shops'. What I did see was expensive cars, organic food shops and expensive looking cafes.
You see, it was Primrose Hill.
Anyway, what about you? You bang on about others, insulting and abusing people, but you keep quiet about yourself, don't you?
So come on, what are you? ****ing Champagne Socialist you are. Bloody petit bourgeois.
"Well judging by your résumé........"class traitor" would sum it up I reckon."
What would you prefer then Ernie, should I go back to the council estate? If I still had a forelock, I'd tug it. Which part of my 'resume' bothered you then?
Beans innit?
Supermarket own brand = Working.
Heinz = Middle
None = Upper.
Or alternatively, if you don't give a crap about it then you're working, if you care then you're middle and if you think classes are 'them' and 'us' then you're upper.
..... but you keep quiet about yourself, don't you?So come on, what are you?
Well you keep reminding everyone that I'm a building worker and I have already stated what my class is
........so what's your point globin man ?
'Estate' is key.
Working class types live on them, the upper class own them and the middle class drive them.
Or something.
Better things to do with my life than care how other people want to pigeon hole me.
Class - it's like cool, the more you worry about it, the less you have
I'm Australian, so I'm pure class 🙂
