At least he appears to be getting a near universal scrubbing (tho the Torygraph headline is softer than others).

What a ****.

I hope he doesn't drive along Aberystwyth seafront. That was closed for nearly a year to investigate the Arson/manslaughter.

I particularly enjoyed this line from the linked article:

His no holes barred style

Dear Mr Telegraph journalist. That phrase doesn’t mean what I think you think it means.

Also, please.. JC is a fool. Stop putting his attention seeking capering in the paper.

It’s not a gaffe, it’s not a mistake, it’s not an error of judgement.
He knows exactly what he’s doing, namely drawing attention to himself.
That was his intention all along.

I'm not convinced that the cause of any RTC, as determined after 15 minutes of investigation is ever any different from the conclusion after 8 hours of road closure.

Yes but when the investigation is picked apart in court the 8 hours may be worth it

Maybe so but you've still got to have evidence to back up your determinations / hunches / musings...

Probably. I suspect an experienced cop would be able to have a pretty good guess at what happened after a quick chat with witnesses and a walk around.
However I also suspect that the cop wouldnt be able to convince a jury of it under hostile questioning from the defence lawyer.

In the week that yet another new version of BBC Top Gear airs, everyone is talking about Clarkson and being reminded that his classic lineup version (Grand Tour) is available to watch.

In the event of a death it becomes a suspected scene of crime so they have to wait for the appropriate investigators to arrive. This can take hours depending how many teams are available. I'm sure if it was a loved one of yours that was deceased you would want it investigating properly?

Nonsense.

If he lost the power of speech, I'd still think he was a ****. 🙂

We all know what causes RTCs. Nobody seems to disagree that the cause can be established in 15 minutes. The 8 hours of closure that can cause misery and cost to thousands, including missed weddings, holidays, job interviews, are there to insure the guilty party gets his punishment of £500 and 6 points.

I disagree. Unless there's some way you can measure blood alcohol in all involved, impact marks on the road, measure skid marks, measure sight lines, retrieve evidence from phones, tachos, dash cams, get witness evidence cctv from infrastructure in the area, photograph and map the scene etc, etc and all to an evidential standard in fifteen minutes.

30 years of dealing with RTCs and never known one take 15 minutes to establish unless the person admits to it or there's recorded footage.

Most people seem to disagree. At least those with any sense at all.

This. A friend of mine does that job. It's highly specialised, requiring study and professional exams.

Perhaps 'BigJohn' thinks The Mentalist is a documentary series, not a fictional TV show?

I assume you're just trolling as otherwise I'm surprised you can even use a keyboard with this level of stupidity. Can you really not understand there's a vast difference between having a rough idea what happened vs having gathered evidence to a sufficient standard that you can prosecute based off it? And also maybe that cleaning up the road properly so you can go on your merry way to your holiday without risking a puncture etc. might take a bit of effort to when several cars are involved?

So missing a wedding or job interview is more important than gathering evidence of what could be a very serious crime? I struggle to understand people sometimes. Typical my life and time is more important than anyone else’s attitude.

For those we know what the cause is - If it was your partner who had been killed in a car crash would you be happy with a quick 15 minute assessment and then the case failing in court and the driver who killed your partner walking away without a single consequence?

I investigate road deaths for living. I'd love to have BigJohn on board to tell me what happened in 15 mins. Alas, he can't be everywhere so I'll need to stick with closing the road, arranging diversions, calling out forensic crash investigators with their fancy scanner and scene examination staff with their camera, and fingerprint / DNA swabbing kits. Possibly biologists, chemists and maybe even a crime scene manager, all of whom may have been called out from their beds. All these people need a sterile and safe environment to gather detailed evidence and not get themselves run over in the process. CCTV dashcam and door to door checks need to be done before witnesses disappear or mates decide to record over vital footage to protect their pal.

Sometimes we need to wait for daylight to really see those little things like where a locked wheel mark actually started or finished (gives us an initial speed), or where it deviated, (giving us an exact point of impact). Kind of important to establish who was on what side of the road and that isn't easy when the victims can be in bits and scattered far and wide and vehicles resemble a Haynes manual exploded diagram. Sometimes we need to call in a HiAb to suspend a car against another or over a gouge in the road to find exactly how they impacted. A dog handler or the support unit may be called in to ensure injured parties haven't wandered off and collapsed 200yds away. We may need to carry out fingertip searches, not just for evidence but to ensure skull fragments or body matter aren't left for kids or visiting relatives to find. We also need basic stuff like a crew at the scene to investigate, a crew at the hospital for medical updates confirming who is involved, a crew to take the bad man away to undertake station procedure for drink or drug driving, a crew to tell the family that their loved one isn't coming home, (oh and while were here, can you nip down the mortuary with us it ID them, cheers). We may need to take mobile phones for cell site analysis / app activity and phones can be thrown quite far by an impact.

Once were happy we have everything, we call out recovery agents for the vehicles then the council to clean matter from the road, make safe any electrics in lamp posts or junction boxes that may have been hit and shovel sand onto any fuel or oil that has contaminated the road surface, or if bad enough, call out a road sweeper. Then we open the road. Hopefully by painstakingly carrying out the above, we can build a case that can be proven beyond all reasonable doubt and leave the road in a usable condition for the public.

15 minutes my arse.

Pwned, as the kids used to say.

Had to change my holiday plans the other week when the M6 was closed in Cumbria. Not ideal, but someone was dead and I was quite prepared to ride somewhere else that day while the investigators did their unenviable jobs.
