I was very taken aback with the Radio4 coverage of the recent Netflix series (which I haven’t watched) where their correspondent took on the role of apologist and defender of the Daily Mail. The UK media defending itself in action. Yup, He's been playing a role for ~25 years, but I think He started to mutate into actually becoming the caricature he was playing about ~15 odd years ago and somewhere along the way just forgot what it was like to not be a prick, now he's kind of stuck like that.
I kind of view Clarkson and his deliberate public ****tery as symptomatic of our national decline, as the nation slides into irrelevance and obsesses over its long gone glorious past, so does the Clarkson.
He's only ever really been rewarded for playing a sort of oafish middle-aged bigot. Even when he got himself sacked from the BBC he managed to fall upwards into the wealth laden arms of Jeff Bezos, that's not really how the world should work.
It all serves to reinforce the message to all those other well off middle-aged oafs; you don't really need to change or learn to treat others with respect, the world will work around you and accommodate your need to be an outspoken arse. Sadly this is still the case.

The comments on this thread are all about what he wrote, and someone is trying to help you understand the possible ramifications of such hate speech appearing in the national press. It could all be performative... that doesn't really change anything if it is... but he claims that his hatred is at the "cellular level" rather than just done for attention... so we can probably suspect that he wants at least some of his audience to believe that the means is, whether he really believes it or not. That dividing up your audience into "it's just a joke no harm done", and "yeah, he's right, I'm one of those people he says also has this base hatred" is a hard line to walk, and I think that he's wobbled right over that line this time. Long been a big fan... enjoyed all the stuff he's done after the move to Amazon, especially the farm... even enjoy and seek out watching Millionaire with him hosting... but this one has stopped me in my tracks, and has me second guessing all the times I've gone along with his "japes"... this one doesn't look funny... in fact it stinks... and I'm now embarrassed to have gone alone with him in the past when he has walked that line more successfully. The fact he thinks he can get away with it says a lot about our press, and what they allow to be thrown at their "targets".

If it was an of the cuff remark you could perhaps treat it as such. But it's not, it's something he's sat down and carefully considered every word of, through several drafts, and the the sub editor and lawyers will have double checked.
If he'd meant "with every fiber of my being" he would have said that, yet he didn't, he didn't even say "I hate every fiber of her being". He's carefully chosen a very specific set of words.

While thats true, especially in the kind of publications we're talking about, there are real world consequences when it starts blurring the boundries into hate speech and incitement.
The general national conversation has become so corrupted since a lot of standards were thrown out of the window in a certain divisive campaign in 2016, that we've become so desensitised it as to believe some things are acceptable, when they're really not. Not in any kind of civilised society anyway.

Which was the whole point of their Netflix series (still not watched it). Easy for you and I to opt out. Not so easy for Markle and others. Once she was a target, and the Royal Family looked to be tactility accepting that she was a target, her life was made hell. Clarkson's piece is upping the anti when it comes to getting people to hate her. That will leak beyond just impacting her. It's horrendous stuff really.
He's written and got away with writing worse. Which is a comment about this country and "journalism", rather than about him.
He's doing so because he thinks that the target audience feels this way and will get riled up by it, not necessarily because he does.

I don't read it as racism - the "cellular level" refers to his cellular level, nothing to do with hers. He's comparing MM to other women that he loathes. This comes across as misogynistic, but again, I'm almost certain that's not what he was intending. He was aiming (in his confused eyes) for comparable people. So Women (check), Controversial (check) and that's as far as he got.
As someone above said, he's an idiot with little in the way of a filter between his brain and his mouth, but that filter should have been provided by The Sun and its Editors.
