She was a hell of a girl, didnt agree with her stance on hunting but was entertaining.
Hell of a career (youngest woman called to the bar) , hell of a story (very privileged but abusive childhood) and a hell of a lot of drinking away a fortune of an inheritance - the world is a sadder place for her passing.
I suppose we'll never hear the truth about the 'Miranda' tales now either 🙁
I was surprised to read that she was only 66. RIP though.
Yep, lovable English lunatic - saw her interviewed a couple of times on various chat shows and she was hilarious.
The world is a sadder place without her.
RIP.
Full-bodied and lovably bonkers. RIP 🙁
"Born Clarissa Theresa Philomena Aileen Mary Josephine Agnes Elsie Trilby Louise Esmerelda Dickson Wright...." (Wiki)
Wow.
can't be that surprising - she didn't exactly look a picture of health...
TG - nobody said it was surprising that she's died.
And what pray tell is "the picture of health?"
I loved those two crazy ladies. They lived it to the full.
No balance. Just red lined it all the way to the finish.
RIP Clarissa darling.
can't be that surprising
...Because everyone dies?
Odd comment.
Brilliant woman, wish there were more like her.
Was very surprised to hear her theory on why we're all depressed (lack of fat) being re-played on radio earlier.
To para-phrase, we should be prescribing cream cakes, not prozac it seems.
Bizarre.
Any death is sad, I never really knew her, but she obviously had the kind of presence which will be missed by many.
Her agent or someone described her as being 'totally un-PC'. What does that mean? Liked racist jokes?
Seemed a strange comment to pick out.
Quite the character, as was Jennifer Paterson.
sad to hear of her passing. uncompromising, entertaining, provocative, unapologetic, one of life's larger than life characters 🙂
I seem to recall she argued her ah size was caused by overdoses of quinine (in the tonic...)
totally un-PC
Apples.
Apple pie. Apple strudel. Apple crumble
TG - nobody said it was surprising that she's died.

Is the world really really that much worse of with the loss of another tory toff...? I don't want anyone to die prematurely but a woman of privilege born into money who supported the right of other toffs to kill animals for sport, I couldn't give a toss about.
Yup, Loddrik, politics and class defines everyone 🙄 you'd be happy to be thought of just as a chip-on-the-shoulder leftie or whatever?
That'll do me just fine. My wife would agree with you I'm sure too.
lived life to the full.....nowt wrong with that.
Tory Toff she might have been, but she had a very interesting life.
I admired her for her character, but suspect I'd have disagreed with her on almost everything.
She'd have been good on here. 🙂
Her views are irrelevant, she made the world a more interesting place.
She was great on Desert Island Discs Linky.
Loddrick - read up a bit on her life and then re read your post.
(before you post anymore)
In fact, I will help you out a bit: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2003/feb/13/gender.uk
Her partner in the "Two Fat Ladies" cooking combo, Jennifer Paterson, was asked to comment on being instructed by Linda McCartney to publicise more vegetarian recipes. She said "Well, I thought it was rather impertinent". 😆 😆
That'll do me just fine. My wife would agree with you I'm sure too.
you confessed on this forum to pushing drugs as a youth, didn't you ?
She was very entertaining and spoke a lot of sense on many issues. Stood up for what she believed.
"Tory Toff" you know so little.
you confessed on this forum to pushing drugs as a youth, didn't you ?
As an adult too. Why?
It is living that is hard not dying. Dying is easy.
She lived a full life so nothing sad about her passing but just another journey.
So long fat woman who speaks her mind.
🙂
p/s: your recipes can be complicated at times ...

Standard STW knee-jerk reaction evident with some hereabouts.
"Hunting" = "Tory Toff". 🙄
Nothing to see here...
As an adult too. Why?
just puts your sense of morals in perspective, doesn't it?
Don't think she ever exploited fellow members of society to make a quick buck...
Comparing the death of Bob Crow Vs Clarissa Dickson Wright.
The former was a pain in the arse while the latter gave poor cooking recipes (well does not suit my taste).
Death? They all got it cheap.
🙄
Both characters who stuck to their beliefs rather than pander to the vox pop. Not a big fan of either but the world is a duller place without them
Like the Linda McCartney comment up there ^ somewhere 🙂
She signed a cookbook for me once, it reads:
"Bollocks to Blair,
Clarissa"
😆
I liked the old girl, called a spade a spade or, in her case, a fat lady a fat lady. Quite a personality - her autobiography was a good read.
Yeah, because drug pushing is such a giggle, isn't it, Loddrik?
😐

Certainly gives one a firm standing point when discussing morality, and 'doing the right thing'.
Where did I proclaim myself the moral arbiter of the country???
I didn't bring up my previous vocational endeavours, and it really is a ridiculous thing to bring up as a response to me saying I have little sympathy with a woman of her background.
And the term 'pushing'... Come on???
So you damn her for her background, not actually anything she has done in her life? Well that's OK then. That makes perfect sense.
Where did I proclaim myself the moral arbiter of the country???
You are always doing it indirectly, with snide comments about middle classes living in Surrey, other peoples politics, etc.
Person disagrees with someone else on the internet shocker....
But of course, because of my, erm, 'background', then I am not allowed to have an opinion on anyone that may differ from the status quo, especially if she is a 'loveable English eccentric'...
You are always doing it indirectly, with snide comments about middle classes living in Surrey, other peoples politics, etc.
They are personal views, no? I'm not producing a manifesto and running for office.
You're making snide comments about 'pushing' drugs. Whatever that is 😕
I think you'll find my comments about Surrey are few and far between, and borne out of experience of living there, which is more than can be said of peoples frequent snide comments about where I'm from by people who have never ever even visited.
What you've done there is latched onto a small number of replies I've made and formed an opinion as it being fact. A generalisation then.
And yes, I'm staunchly left wing, with socialist elements, so I'll mourn the loss of Tony Benn, but not Clarissa Dixon Wright.
Can't really overlook her support for hunting because her dad was a ****.
I have little sympathy with a woman of her background.
you have little sympathy for someone who was relentlessly beaten by her father as a child, because the family was rich?
nice.
What a narrow world view.
What you've done there is latched onto a small number of replies I've made and formed an opinion as it being fact. A generalisation then.
which is what you've done here.
And yes, I'm staunchly left wing, with socialist elements
I'd figured that - where does the drug selling fit with your political ideals then ?
It's a narrow world view when viewed from your world view. I could turn it around and yours would look pretty narrow to me. And turnerguys too I'll bet...

WTF do you know about mine? What does that even mean?
You seem to be saying anyone born into wealth is worth less than others?
I prefer not to prejudge folk where possible.
I'd figured that - where does the drug selling fit with your political ideals then ?
Ha ha, brilliant!!!!!!
So people only work in a job wich 'fits' in with their political views??!
My wife is an IT project manager, what should her political views be?

You've just accused me of having a narrow world view, from a little bit I type on a mountain bike forum. Wtf do you know about me??!? **** all. So let's back off with the generalisations and prejudgements. I can't believe you haven't had a chuckle at whet you've just typed.
So people only work in a job wich 'fits' in with their political views??!
so selling drugs was a job then, albeit an illegal one?
My wife is an IT project manager, what should her political views be?
I don't know your wife, but I feel pity for her...
What an angry chap you are, Lodders. Have a nice cup of tea and a slice of cake to help you calm down. 🙂
Clarissa would approve of my prescription, I'm sure. (And yes, I did meet her a few times through my mother in law, who was good friends with the other Fat Lady!)

Did I miss the memo saying STW towers are advertising for a forum troll?
And RIP.
so selling drugs was a job then, albeit an illegal one?
So what else was it. A leisure pursuit??!
Dunno how many times we've done this over the years. I have different views to some of you. And different morals.
No doubt we'll do it again periodically too....
And different morals.
you have some morals then - you surprise me...
And different morals.
you have some morals then - you surprise me...
🙄
I wish I knew you in real life. You sound great. 😐
Seems a shame having to close a RIP due to a few individuals but as we'd have to keep a constant watch on the children bickering I have no choice.
RIP Clarissa a true character.
