We've decided to see if we can claim back some PPI money from a loan we took out 8 years ago?
The loan was from a bank but the insurance was from a separate company not linked to them.
Can we still claim?
Also, its a bit of a minefield, so we were thinking of using one of the no win no fee companies to trace it for us.
Has anyone used one of these companies they could recommend?
They seem to want around 30% plus 20% vat of the total payout!
Would rather not give them 50% if we could find one a bit cheaper?

I reckon it'd be difficult if you bought the insurance on purpose, ie 'mis-bought' rather than 'mis-sold'.

Don't use any of these claims companies; as you've rightly pointed out, they keep up to 50%.
If I were you, I'd go to your bank, and speak to your account manager, ask if they'd be kind enough to to tick the appropriate boxes for you on the paperwork.
This is what I did, while I was meeting with my manager about tidying up my accounts of some defunct DD's.
I wasn't even sure if I had any possible claims, but I'd had some forms sent to me that I couldn't make much sense of, and put to one side and forgot, so she gave me a number to call to instigate the process, and I dropped in to the bank the forms they sent me.
A little while after she called me to say my payment was in. I got back £11,686.
Would you rather have 100%, or 50%?

Did a broker put the insurance and loan together for you or did your search out the insurance independently? Under what grounds do you think it was missold to you?
