Quick question - how deep should the nails heads be in T&G cladding?

Flush with the surface, just below or quite a bit below?

I am suspecting someone has used a nail gun set too high.

With both round heads and brads.

Flush with the surface without damage to the grain.

With softwoods it can be hard to achieve, as in the lowest setting is still too powerful.

Problem I have is very single nail in a large shed looks to be overdriven deep into the cladding.

Like this but deeper:

Your link did not work for me.

From the three heads in that photo, you can see different depths for each one, possible all with the same setting. first to standard (just acceptable), second over (low density, board or frame or both), third proud (high density, in a knot).

With your issue you could drive a new fixing close to the original, and then plug the damage with some suitable stopping or filler to protect the timber.

Thanks neil, the problem is every nail on a large shed 16x10 is like this so it's going to be a lot of work. This is on top of a leaking roof, leaking windows, leaking joints, splits in the frame etc from nails and screws put in at the edges....

that should have been 'every', as in every single nail. New shed. Trying to 'resolve' it with the maker. Am concerned on how being over driven will affect the lifetime of the cladding as it just looks very wrong to me.

I figured that out.

IMO - Not fit for purpose, good luck.

Well the issue is that the boards are more likely to lift and rot, but it sounds like it wouldn't last that long with the other problems you have listed.

They probably go through this on a regular basis then.

Might be a bit too early for that?

yeah wont post just yet, although very tempted.

From new I had the following problems:

Roof leaked
Windows leaked
Joints between panels leaked
T&G was not very well fitted together
Nails overdriven to about half of the thickness of the cladding
Large splits in the cladding you can see daylight through and a lot of knot holes
The floor had so many gaps I ended up laying a new floor which got ruined by the leaks
Lots of nails and screws put in so badly they split the frame or completely missed the frame
Screws overdriven into the frame work and heads stripped

It was sold as a 'workshop' but I have not been able to use it for one single day!

Just taken some photos to send to them:

Examples of nails on the outside of the building (note the workshop is now flat packed so I am limited on access but these are typical)

Again this is typical of the rest of the structure.

They could be using guns at the lowest settings and still be over powered, in which case the appropriate tools should be used instead. The timber is obviously not very mature or dense.

As the rest of the construction quality is so poor, it seems that they probably don't care too much.

Good luck again, I hope you don't have to fight too hard to get this sorted.

They were spouting their terms and conditions yesterday so I pointed out that their terms are not allowed to overrule my statutory rights.

I also checked their terms and conditions that state I have a right to cancel the contract if they do not fix anything when asked to do so in writing within 21 days.

It took 6 weeks to get a response to my original complaint (I had to get in touch to get a response) and then they eventually came back to me with a date 27 days later to just fix the roof.

They have clearly broken their own terms and conditions let alone the sales of goods act.

Sound like a bunch of yee-haas.

Might be worth talking to trading standards to see if they have an open file.

Any complaints will be recorded in the council borough or county where the company is based, not according to where the customer is.

May as well name and shame:

urban forest timber buildings: http://urbanforest-timberbuildings.co.uk/Urban_Forest_Timber_Buildings.html

Spoke to their managing director last week and he said he would look at the photos and call me the next day before 10.30 to sort it out. Guess what, 1 week later and no phone call.

Shame they don't have any social media I can show potential customers the 'quality' of their work.

Anyway, for anyone looking for a shed - look at the photos above before you go any further!

Hi everyone,

Just thought I should share the horrendous experience that is dealing with Urban Forest Timber Buildings, and see if I can't help others who are having the misfortune of dealing with them (or discourage you from ever buying from them!).

I put a deposit of £113 on a shed back in early March and was promised a delivery date of May 16th (today). I have heard literally nothing from them since the day I handed over the money. I called and emailed them repeatedly all last week to check that the delivery was happening, but, as others have experienced, they never answer the phone and don't respond to emails. Surprise, surprise, no shed has turned up today and I strongly suspect that I'll never hear another word from them. You better believe I'll do my best to pester them until I get my money back, and will be speaking to trading standards.

I may have some means of contacting them if others are having problems, although I can't promise they're definitely right (just what I came up with through an extensive internet trawl). The company has two directors:

David Richards - 07934 182068 - 01384 274585 - https://m.facebook.com/david.richards.98?pn_ref=info_relation

Catherine Owen - 07958 087099 - catherine.owen1@yahoo.co.uk - https://m.facebook.com/CatherinePatriciaOwen

Feel free to try to contact them, I've yet to receive any response but you may have better luck and at least the annoyance might make them realise they can't treat people like this! Email them, text them, call them, send them Facebook messages, make them hear you!

Oh and don't give them a penny of your hard earned cash, you'll regret it if you do!

I have heard they have no gone out of business. Good riddance but sadly they will probably be back under another name.

tbh I think you have had a lucky escape. Has cost me a lot more than £113 to get my workshop anywhere near useble and i am still left with cladding I would only use for fire wood if it was not treated. I have just realised they have left a load of nails out of the door when I was trying to work out why the middle panels were warping so much gaps were appearing so new door now needed.

I tried north somerset trading standards who didn't want to know, which was really helpful.
