Is a family camping fortnight on the west coast of Scotland in August complete madness, or will it be brilliant?

Likely to be fine. The gale force wind will keep them at bay.

(TBH it's never normally that bad right by the sea.)

It's a beautiful place, however we have been twice in August and it's been single digit temperatures and very exposed and blustery.
No midgies at all.

To me a fortnight would be too long, no shop nearby

There are nice shops at Lochinver and Drumbeg - stock up on local pies, cheese and smoked salmon.

As above, sea 'breeze' will likely keep them at bay.
I too would look to move for the second week.
