I think and hope you are confusing 'civil service' and 'public sector'.
Hmmm, that's right, you pay the public sector workers lower than private partly on the basis that at retirement there may be a pension worth having.
The private sector has had cracking pay rises for years, whilst the public sectors have been poor in comparison.
Now inflation is down the private sector whinge for 10 mins until the markets pick up again and the gravy train gets back up to speed. In the meantime you want to plunder the little piece of grim comfort the public sector have.
Oh and the NHS closed its final salary scheme top new starters a while ago and not as the 'thisismoney' article implies.

Thankfully, all over the world, the birth rate is falling - otherwise there'll soon be standing room only - however, that inevitably leads to a LOT of useless wrinklies cluttering the place up, refusing to die and wanting to eat (and exercise their democratic rights), and less and less people to look after them and supply the goods.

Hold on, when I was a community psychiatric nurse (oh, by the way, at well below national average wage despite 3 years in higher education and getting chucked down the stairs every once in a while), I [i]was[/i] frequently accused of atempting to run people's lives. (if trying to keep odd folk on their pills and out of hospital counts as running their lives that is.)
If that was me running the life of anyone on here, I sincerely apologise, I'll try not to do it again. Farm it out to private enterprise and see how much the armed forces, acute hosptals and mental health services, social services and education go to s**t then.

I'm sorry Lanesra - I'm going to take personal exception to that - being as I am technically part of this "bloated" establishment - obviously me only having a PhD shows my limited ability and of course being one of the 10 or so most able folk in my field in Europe shows that I'm just not up to the task.
All this for about 25K and a 44 hour minimum week and no chance of a final salary scheme any more - sounds like a gravy train to you?

lanesra - there are no BUPA Midwives fella, in fact there are very few private sector midwives - insurance companies will not even consider the risk. Married to a midwife and we did look at setting something up but the numbers involved were laughable.
She will get a good pension but is currently paid buttons and treated very badly IMO. I run 2 small businesses and no employee would accept her conditions for the money. Her mums are lucky, she is committed to mother focused and midwife led care so sticks with it.
I suggest that you engage your brain before instructing your fingers to go anywhere near a keyboard in future.
