You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I was getting close to a BMI of 25 it's the main reason I have watching the what I drink/eat and averaging 500miles a month on the MTB
I've put on another kg this week, back up to where I started in January ☹️
I've no self control from staying off all the 'treats' my wife buys and comfort eating and drinking is all there is to look forward bro during the stress of juggling keeping running a business and looking after 2 pre-schoolers.
I am about to start shopping at FatLad.
I have to confess to dodging today's weigh in! I knew it would be bad...Lockdown is 10x harder to lose weight!
No weight loss this week. That’s the first time it’s happened, but it was the wife’s birthday on Tuesday so there was cake and booze and no exercise that day so I’m blaming her. Then a second slack day that’s totally my fault.
Back on the diet proper now, so will hopefully be back on track next week.
I gave up booze and started to walk more at the end of January. Went from 13 stone to 12 stone 2.
Then my scales broke. Even though I'm exercising far more than I ever have the new scales say that I'm putting on weight.
Not happy. I want my old scales back.
I was losing weight on a 450 calorie walk but gaining weight on a 1000 calorie ride.
These are Strava calories.
1.1kg off. I don't know either.....
Only a tiny bit off this week - I confess to re-weighing after the ride today hoping for a bit more but nowt. Dammit.
And my elderly Dad is unwell and they don't know what's up, luckily stepmum is pretty spry and pushing for an face to face appointment now but I don't live anywhere near, I lost my Mum last year and ... well b*11*ck5 basically.
Oh well suppose we all just have to get on with it eh?
Well if I've learned nothing else this lockdown I have come to the realisation that sitting around being moderately inactive and eating crap isn't conducive to weight loss. However I really do need to tackle my expanding waste line.
My absolute cut-off point for being actually properly overweight is 17st and I hit 17st 8lb yesterday and that is no good at all. So far today I have managed to not snack incessantly and have done a solid 40 minutes in the 'gym' (the garage is set up with a treadmill, boxing bag, weights etc before the social distancing brigade turn up with the pitchforks).
I just have to make a real effort to keep it up and that has been the issue to date. I am fine in fits and starts but really need to knuckle down. Stupid thing is a good workout really helps with my depression as well so why I don't just get to it is anyone's guess.
Loads of miles on the bike and watching what I eat/drink and I am down to 11st 12lbs (from 13st) ideally I need to be 11st,I don't do well mentally sitting around doing nothing so being able to ride the bike has been a lifesaver
Still sitting at 75kg (down from 88 at New Year) and just looking to maintain that for a few months. Working out alright in Lockdown as I got canned from work so just spend my days doing kettlebells and walking or cycling. While my weight has stayed the same, my legs have filled out - reckon I've lost some upper body weight/strength and put it on the legs since they're getting the brunt of the exercise. Doing 200 pressups a day though which is keeping the top half in check
Down 6kg since early January but have stagnated since end March when all this nonsense kicked off. Had a very quiet April but managed to keep pretty much flat. Since last week I've found myself a nice local loop from the door which is about 32k which I'm hammering 3 times a week. Hopefully that along with restarting a stricter diet will soon pay dividends. My bmi is 25.1 but want to shed another 6kg thenbtake it from there.
A pound off this week and still under target.
Rob is quite happy with that.
Only 200g off this week. Initial reaction is a bit miffed, all the effort (*) for little gain but looking a long term I've gone from 86kg in Jan to just under 74kg. If I hadn't been making the effort have to remind myself that small loss could have been a gain.
*Mainly during the week- didn't help that cupcakes were baked for the VE weekend Social distance Street Party and a few beers were had at the weekend barbecue, though I did get 3 rides in.
Out of interest, I weighed myself on Monday- 74.9kg after being at 74kg last Fri. and down to 73.8kg today.
Weight still going north rather than south but have managed to do 4 days on the trot of an hours proper workout. Have also re-joined Zwift - not nearly fit enough to ride on the rode and a turbo session gives me one more thing in the mix of exercises to do so worth the entry fee.
I'm hoping that a few weeks of proper application and effort things will start going in the right direction. On the plus side my body fat is down and my muscle mass up - just a couple of percent but at least it's not all bad news!
The battery in my scales has gone flat and it is a bit of a faff to change. Coupled to the fact that I am not exercising and eating loads I have decided the battery must remain out until lock down is over and I can get my life back to some sort of normality.
2.5KG down this week which makes up for last week's stagnation. There weren't any cakes or chips this week though.
FB-ATB - that's really good! I've done similar - went from 88kg at new year to 73.5kg now. What I am finding is that I now use up less calories for the same exercise and have to eat even less. It's like punishment for success!
YGH- cheers, I guess having lost 20% of your body weight you need less calories to move it!
Not sure if I’ve read it on a thread here or on a tv prog, but ISTRC that it’s argued as far as evolution is concerned we’re still wired to be hunter gatherers.
When we cut down to loose weight, after a while the body thinks we’re in famine mode so will adjust its metabolism, hence the plateau we get.
No change. Doing more exercise which is good but offsetting that with lockdown, home schooling junk snacks...
FB-ATB - yeah, the metabolism change is a thing. However, I am using it to my advantage by essentially staying at this same (lower) weight for 3 months so your metabolism accepts it as the new normal. You're more likely to keep your weight loss off that way. Also, 3 months of balanced calorie neutral eating helps with habit forming which is the only way not to end up back where you were after a year or two.
Other people I know who do weightlifting have found that if they cut (diet) and then immediately start going into calorie surplus to do weightlifting that they balloon back up with the calories being stored as fat.
Another thing to realise - your overall mass has dropped by 20%, but some of that mass is fixed - organs/bones etc, so the % change in what you have done is much higher! Your bones are 15% of your overall mass.
@welshfarmer *battery*?
Here we've got a mahoosive metal set of bathroom scales inherited from the FiL around a quarter of a century ago. (I convert into kg after). It is exercise in itself dragging it out.
But I understand about the time not always being right to try to lose weight. I put it on over the past two years what with injuries and one parent dying. Having just started to shed some chub the other one has passed on but the situation is very different so haven't started stress eating yet.
I couldn’t find my scales the other day (mrs had used them and put them away!) so I weighed myself with my old digi scales and was 4lbs lighter than I’d been just a few days before when using the new scales.
I eventually found my new ones and they had me back where I was at 4lbs heavier than the old scales. I now like my old scales best.
So, as well as doing lots of walking and cycling, I have also been doing 200 pressups a day since lockdown started, so about 7 or 8 weeks now?
Starting to pay off:

I realise this picture is a bit ****y, but I just want to get it on record as I doubt I'll ever get like this again.
Phoar! 😉
Finally some southward movement! That said, I would have been disappointed if the had not been some progress given the amount of exercise I have been doing. Still eating a sensible amount - been there and done that with kicking in some training and not eating enough but c. 1.5 kg this week is a good start :).
Just updated my fatness on the chart.
Not many people left now, only 3 more weigh ins until we've been at this 6 months (or 20 years in my case)
Anyhow...
31 lbs of chub have now left my body since 1st Jan, feeling much better and more than half way. (21 lbs to go)
That's bloody good going Tiger, I've stalled at about 7lb lost and TBH am frantically going out riding in the tail end of this week (and have had a word with the OH about putting the many home cooked tasty treats aside for me til Sunday afternoon) to at least not gain stuff back...
Bloody hell 2 stone in this year, you must feel so different!
That’s bloody good going Tiger,
Cheers 🙂
Bloody hell 2 stone in this year, you must feel so different!
Yes, but it's a slow process so that you don't really notice, but i know i feel so much better, but just in the same way it's so easy to slowly gain wait and one day go.... " ****! how did I get to 16stone?"
I didnt sign up to chub club but decided when I began working from home and lockdown was announced that I wouldn't have any junk food in the house. Weighed in at 13/5 and am now 11/12 so 1 1/2 stone off. Hoping to get down to 11/0 but anything under 11/7 would be good as I haven't been that low since my late 20s.
I don't have the mindset to do these sorts of things, same as racing/ logging on Stra*a etc. But I did make a conscious effort in 2018 to get flab off, not weight as I've never found weighing-in helpful, but work on how I look and clothes feel. Was going well, then broke my leg 14th December and it's gone belly-up (excuse the pun) since then, I weighed myself this week and sod a dog, never been so heavy. I'm hoping much of the mass is down to muscle mass gain as I've been cross training a lot, running, weights, SkiErg and finally after a long time back riding properly again. So hoping with more self control it might work again, else it's a big investment in new work shirts...
Still 73kg and up to 100 pressups in one go
I’m in a frustrating plateau / drop a good bit / plateau phase, last week was one of the good ones so back on track with the -2lb/week track.
Now down 4.5 stone since Jan 6th and I’m now at the same weight I was 10 years ago when I started tracking my weight, which I was quite chuffed about, but had to remind myself that the reason I started tracking was because I’d got fat, so need to lose another 2.5 stone to get to an acceptable level.
My legs aren’t really changing size, just changing from chub to muscle with all the riding!
Down another 1.2KG this week, so that's 20.8KG since 12th Feb. I'm about 2/3 of the way to my completely arbitrary weight target that will see me under 25BMI.
I can now run a 5K in under 30 minutes (26:30 best time) whereas before I couldn't run for 5 minutes. I'm now waiting ofr the gyms to re-open so I can start strength training again after a 4 year break.
I've spent a bloody fortune on clothes and after getting some new work shorts that were far too big I'm probably going to have to return all the trousers for a smaller size!
Doomanic 👏👏👏
I'm still going North but feeling slightly healthier due to not WFH every day.
@chrisdb @doomaniac
You guys have done some incredible, life changing weight losses. You should be so proud! Respect.
Thanks guys. It’s been hard work, but totally worth it. I didn’t really think I looked much different until I saw myself in profile in the wife’s full length dress mirror. I used to hate that mirror and avoid it where possible, now, not so much.
After small losses for the last 3-4 weeks, I've dropped 1.1kg since last week, but not changed much in eating/exercise to cause the drop. Can't fathom this out. I did file the hard skin off my heels- maybe that was the reason!
Not a good week for me! No loss
Hadn’t thought about removing skin though so I’ll unearth the Angle grinder and set too on my crusty feet 👍😀
Finally sneaked under 85kg this morning from 90kg at new year.
Slow going but I've not been super dedicated, just making little changes here and there. Diet is healthier but I've not been watching calories. Also building up the exercise gently, doing 7ish hours a week on bike but mostly low intensity, and strength work is mostly only body weight, twice a week.
What I have noticed is that my morning weight (all else being equal) is either 86.5kg or 84.9kg, and the common factor seems to be how much whisky I had the night before! I guess whisky gives you the 'benefit' of alchohol related dehydration without the 'drawback' of pints and pints of beer with it. Not a technique I plan to employ very often right enough...
5kg in 6 months, not much by the standards set above, but I'm on track for 80kg by next year before I hit the Pyrenees!
Another decent week for me to now 0.2lbs below my chub club target for the quarter so pleased with that.
@FB-ATB I can't work out it out either, although I'm working on the theory that it seems to take my body about 5 days to react to a significant calorie defect i.e. did loads over the weekend, >4500 cal deficit combined over the two days, weight only dropped a bit a week or so later. Other days this week I've run less of a deficit, probably -700cals/day on average.
Another week, another 1KG down. My weight loss is starting to slow so I’m looking to try something a little different and cut out all artificial sweeteners for a couple of weeks. After I’ve eaten the Keto Lemon Drizzle cake and Keto Chocolate Brownies I’ve baked this week of course...
Impressive to be losing that much and still be eating cake.
Stabilising around 95kg atm, which is 6 lost since start of year. That's modest compared to some, but actually feels quite significant, as I've been 101/102 forever. Longer term if I could hit 90 that would be the promised land, but small steps.
tbh it's all been driven by the (lack of) beer - went teetotal 3 months back. Diet still distinctly average. OTOH if it wasn't for covid I reckon I'd be a lot further along, eat a lot more at home int he day then I used to do at work.
wd to everyone sticking with it - some really impressive weight loss.
tbh it’s all been driven by the (lack of) beer – went teetotal 3 months back. Diet still distinctly average.
It feels like I need to consider my alcohol intake next, an average week might be:
1 bottle red
2 440ml cans strong craft IPA
1 or 2 330ml cans alcohol free beer
1 or 2 whiskies (usually a generous double, cheap stuff over ice at the moment)
Looking at it written down, it still looks 'generous', and almost certainly over the 14 units that's recommended. Also, with craft IPA inevitably comes crisps!
Good compromise might be 1 bottle red, couple cans fancy alcohol free, and try my hardest to substitute crisps for pistachios or something...
In my loss getting off the booze is big part of it, will power to stop snacking goes out the window
I'd say that looks like next to nowt, by my own previous standards, @13thfloormonk, but one's alcohol intake is a personal matter. 3 pints might be a preliminary stomach liner for one, and a decent session for another. I guess the calories don't change either way.
The AF beer is v helpful IME - I like brewdog stuff the best but it will likely get better still, given how undrinkable it all was just a few years back.
3 pints might be a preliminary stomach liner for one, and a decent session for another.
3 pints and I’m on the floor, I’m that much of a lightweight! That’s why I’m envious of those that can drink a lot- an easy way to cut the chub, cutting the beer!
Down .6kg for me this week so happy with that. I restarted my walking in earnest last week and this is paying dividends already. It's strange that even though I was previously clocking up 120k on a bike my weight remained flat. Since resuming walking of about 50k a week the weight is dropping ~.5kg a week. I try to limit calorie intake to ~1800 per day so running a decent deficit. Celebrating tonight with spaghetti bolognese and lashings of red wine, well 2 glasses anyway. Have a good weekend folks.
Well done guys, I kept it static this week. Might start weights up again. Physio treatment is going again now (with us both wrapped up like parcels) so hopefully might be starting running again soon too.
Actually started drinking a little (~100ml wine 2-3 times a week) as at my age a small +ve intake of alcohol seems to be correlated with better life expectancy. We do buy the weeny 200ml-ish bottles usually to limit temptation 😉
Rob - I know we can't always keep Chub Club renewing....but could we this time! With Lockdown a lot of us have gone up, or remained static, it's been a massive challenge with Covid. Could we start a new one "post lock down Chub Club" from 21st June to say end of September ? I would have smashed it if it weren't for Covid...Honestly 🙂
Current Chub club (Q2) is due to end 30th June
I’d be up for Q3
Also happy to pick up the mantle and do some Spreadsheeting and emails 👍😀
I have found this Q2 really difficult. Only just held onto same weight in. A Q3 would be welcome by me and help my well being.
I too have found Q2 to be difficult going but starting to find my groove again. If someone could continue this it would be great and could reward them with cake but that makes us chunky munkies...
I could offer up a slice or two of Keto Brownies if that helps to keep it going.
My non-dieting friend polished off the last of the Keto Lemon Drizzle post ride today. I’m surprised he still has his fingers! 😂
If someone could continue this it would be great and could reward them with cake
I like your thinking- feed someone cake so there’ll be at leat one person worse than you. Bit like not having to be fast enough to out run a lion, just faster than someone else!
Q3 Chub Club would be great. Summers here and we're allowed out again, so only ourselves to blame if we miss the target come end of September.
I missed joining chub club this year, any chance for there to be a Q3 membership? Although I have lost weight since lockdown started I would like to keep it off or even better shrink the belly.
Hey all - Q3 will be go.
YAAAAAY! I hear you cry...
Anyone currently on the list shall be rolled over, anyone not: PM me your email and I'll add you in.
Tiger6791 is taking over the mouthpiece duties, so he's now to blame for the terrible communication you've become accustomed too.
So when does Q3 kick off - Friday 3rd July ? We going for 3 months again ?
thanks for the work to date Rob H
Thanks Rob for all you cajoling and amusing messages (and effort in keeping us ticking along).
Well **** me! I've just done my update for the 1st time in 5 weeks and I'm below target - it's almost like not obsessing about it works out for me 🙂
The way I've set things up the next quarter begins on the day the previous finishes.
So, Q3 begins next week: 26/06/2020 A.D. (AKA The Year of the Tiger)
3 months(ish) it shall be; ending 29th September.
I've been sworn in and deputised with The Chub club Promise
I promise that I will do my best to do my duty to email every Friday
and to the weigh in,
to help other people, not to eat cake (everyday at least)
and to keep the Chub Club going.
I can't promise the wit but I'll do my best...
still above target, in fact my weight is 1kg up for the whole quarter. May as well blow out the next week a really go for it in Q3....
Bravo Rob and Tiger - count me in. Fitter but somehow heavier.
I've sent a private message with my email address. Thanks again. Should help me stay focused on flab free third quarter. May the flab not be with us! (Sorry)
Another slow week for me with only a 600g loss over last week. It's been a bit of a struggle for me lately with stuff going on at home that I have no control over and I feel the need to snack. Chocolate is calling me and while I've resisted so far it's getting harder every day.
Huge thanks to Rob for the wit and the reminders. Both have helped. And thanks to Tiger for picking up the mantle.
Sadly I have flat lined over recent weeks and am 2lbs short of my target. Lots going on over here, so exercise has been limited and the diet has not been at its peak - I think it is fair to say.
Here's to Q3!!😊
First weight added. It's 1.7 more than it was 2 weeks ago 😲
Hello all! I'd like to join for Q3 please. I've just rejoined the forum, clicked on Rob's profile to send a pm but nothing seems to be happening..... Some things change in this world but I always seem to get heavier and the forum still remains clunky! Can I join in??
So is this week the start of Q3 Chub Club ? The excel file has the first weigh in as Friday 3rd July. Can the excel file be updated please 🙂
Maaaaybe (:
@chrispoffer
Have massaged you - if no worky we will find another weigh.
Coming in hot...well, more lukewarm really.
Completely bailed on Q1/2, but in for Q3.
Need to shift the quarantine lbs....and what a quarantine it's been.
Welcome back our Jamie!
I can assure you, you weren't missed :p
El spreadsheet has been updated, so Q3 is now officially GO!
The currency for this season, in resepct of how excited I am about the pubs re-opening* is Mr Porky Pork Scratchings. Quite fitting for this club, I feel.
No! Not because of the name - they contain very nearly no carbs!!!!
But shiteloads of fat...
*Mind you I've decided to knnock drinking on the head for a couple of months
I'm in and updated my target, bravo Rob. I need this. 0.5lb a week is target.
Mind you I’ve decided to knock drinking on the head
Quite right, you spill most of it when you're upside down.
I was a bit miffed I went up a bit in the last 2 weeks- still gives a bit of padding for Q3!
I'm in!...... and have updated the sheet with this week's weight.
It's the first time I've really tracked my weight - and as I'm a reet heifer AND the wrong side of 50 it's definitely not before time. I started upping my dog walking (from a quick round the block to 2.5-3 miles a day) when I was on furlough and have been quite pleased that I've kept it up even though I've been back at work (from home) since the 14th May. I started on the 22nd April and have managed 182 miles since then.
I've managed to drop a steady 1lb or so a week since April, I'm hoping that the 'public' weigh in on a Friday will give me a bit of incentive to keep it going.
2KG off this week. Makes up for last week's frankly pathetic 300g...
