As above, I have a Chromecast gizmo but my TV doesn't have an HDMI port. It's about 9 years old, so it has other ports. I have one scart port free which says 'RGB, Video and S-video' beside it and a 'Component Video' Panel with 3 socket holes labelled Y (green), Pb (blue) and Pr (red).
Is there an adapter I can get to plug into one of these that I can plug the chromecast into? And where is best to buy such a thing? There seems to be a lot of options, and prices vary dramatically for things that look to be identical spec. Bit like bikes to the outsider I suppose!
you can get an hdmi to s video converter box, but you're essentially converting digital to analog, so it's going to be expensive, and probably very hit and miss, esp. if your TV is less than 720.
The HDMI to Scart/Component Video connectors do exist but they are quite expensive and as Warton says a bit rubbish really.
A better solution is probably just to plug a PC/laptop into the TV which uses Video Out or it your TV has a PC in socket (a bit like the one you find on a monitor)
Then you have the "nuclear option" of just buying another TV or perhaps something like a 24/28 computer monitor which has HDMI in and to which you could connect a freeview/freesat box although that's second best.
Bummer - I'm not too technical about these things - what do you mean when you say if the TV is less than 720?
Are you 100% sure there is no HDMI slot on your TV? I have an ancient Sony one and I had to remove a side panel to get to the HDMI port.
Yep, pretty sure it doesn't WackoAK - its a Panasonic Viera TX-26LXD1. I'm intrigued by the link from DezB - anyone got any experience of these?

I use a digital to analogue converter on my projector so I can run my Xbox through it. It works pretty well! I have to run sound through my stereo though as the projector only takes RGB input, not sound.
Cost about 45 quid from CPC.

720 was the first HD, more recently its 1080 and newest stuff is 4k. It refers to the screen resolution, higher numbers more pixels/detail.
Ah, thanks Jamabalaya. Its not an HD TV, so I guess I'm not missing anything by converting the HDMI signal that I wouldn't be getting anyway?
PSA Chromecast is £20 at Currys at the moment
Hmmm, was going to take a punt on the link suggested by DezB since at <£13 it seemed worth a shot, but first I asked seller's opinion. The reply was
'Thanks for interested in our items. We are afraid that this item can't meet your requirement. Any other questions, please feel free to contact us.'
So guess that puts me into the territory of the more expensive options such as ekul's CPC suggestion
I got cheap HDMI to component converter for my Dad's plasma TV. Its not the same as the ones linked above but cost about £30 and does the job fine. I've not done any benchmarking to test absolute video quality but the image produced was clear.
I bought this to connect my Chromecast to an older TV without an HDMI input, and it works exactly as I hoped. It does have to squeeze the width of the picture to fit on the narrower display, so the picture is slightly distorted, but we can live with it for YouTube cartoons for the kids on that TV.
That's an Amazon comment on the DezB box o' tricks.
I saw that comment, atp, but its at odds with what the seller said. Maybe give it a go anyway...
The seller is basically copping out and saying No. So you don't raise an ebay dispute later on.
Well I ordered the converter in DezB's link and.... it works 🙂
Thanks, guys
There is a Roku box that works with older TV's for anyone else in a similar boat. Worth a look.
