[Closed] Chromecast Audio borked. What to replace it with?

As above. Up until last week, my Chromecast Audio would randomly disconnect itself. It did not show up as a casting option in apps such as BBC Sounds, Podcast Addict and YouTube Music. I did the usual "turn it off and turn it back on again" first level tech support trick and that used to work.

But now, following the installation of a new Wi-Fi router (with new SSID and password) for an unrelated reason, it can't connect at all.

As I understand it, Chromecast devices need to be reset to factory defaults if they are to be used on a new wi-fi (or at least a wi-fi with different SSID) and I've done that but, when re-registering in Google Home, I can hear the jingle from the test connection but it fails to connect to the wi-fi. Home just gives a useless "Connection problem during setup" message.

Anyway, if any Chromecast Audio experts have any ideas, feel free to chip in otherwise...it seems that Google doesn't sell the Chromecast Audio anymore so what would be a suitable replacement device (that doesn't cost a huge amount of money)?

Use case:casting above apps to my Yamaha amp for audio playback controlled from my Samsung phone.

TIA

Watching with interest, as one of mine has started playing up a bit.

You can do something with a basic Raspberry Pi, a DAC and Volumio. There is support for most audio streaming stuff, but might require some tweaking to work smoothly. (Mine just failed after 2 years without being touched, took an afternoon of swearing and reformatting, turns out my DAC/Amp combo is no longer supported properly.)

i believe theres another ap you need to setup the older chromecast stuff after google lost their fight with sonos.

i suspect that that has something to do with it

Hmmm...does this imply Sonos hold a patent which means it's not possible to stream over wifi from a phone to an amp?

Anyway, I'll have a dig around for alternative apps.

Bluetooth isn't great, but is there a recommended Bluetooth receiver which can provide audio-out?

That WiiM looks interesting - however, it has a list as music sources it supports and it doesn't include YouTube Music or BBC Sounds which I use.

Anyone happen to know whether they actually work with WiiM or whether there's a similar device and/or app compatible with YTM & Sounds??

I think you need the Google Device Utility App to reconnect them since that bust-up with Sonos.

You can get it from the Play store and it looks like a grey cog.

It was a bit of a faff for me (after needing to set them up on a new mesh network) but got there in the end.

Had a similar problem when i swapped router, and needed to make sure my phone and the CCA were on the same wifi (either both 2.4 GHz or 5 GHZ), and phone right next to the CCA. Also make sure that your phone is running the latest android and Google Home. I think i may have disconnected from the power for 5 - 10 minutes before trying as well.

Google mini connected to a Bluetooth receiver on the amp. Set the Bluetooth as default output on that mini.

I think you need the Google Device Utility App to reconnect them since that bust-up with Sonos.

I'm not sure about it being related to the Sonos ruling {as that stopped Google controlling groups of speakers simultaneously - nothing to do with actual casting}.

I had to reconnect an older Chromecast when I changed WiFi router the other day - phone said it was because the Chromecast was an older model that Google Home didn't directly support.

The answer might be the same though.... Google Device Utility.

(Edited to correct the Sonos ruling.... You can read it here)

No.
But grouping CCA is possibly a thing of the past as you now need to control the volume on each one separately.

{Smug} I wouldn't know as I use Sonos {/smug}

Hmmm, I read that article about Sonos v Google legal battle and I can't figure out whether I've been caught in the cross-fire when Google degraded the CCA functionality.

(As it happens, I only own one set of speakers and have no other "Home" products so I don't needed any of the Sonos IP or any of the Google "eco-system" complexity. I don't need to be able to control volume directly via the CCA either as my Yamaha amp has its own app with volume control...).

I don't think your issue is related in any way.
