Evening all,

I'm in the market for a Chromebook as our family laptop is now approx 9 years old and creaking under the strain of just about everything.

Can anyone recommend me a Chromebook for under £250 please?

Only need it for a bit of web browsing/watching vids online, uploading stuff to Youtube and some light duty spreadsheets/word processing.

Don't mind a good condition refurbished model if that'll get me more bang for my (UK) buck.

Might struggle to get one dur to home schooling... we've just got 2 Asus 11inch ones for our daughters birthday presents, one at the beginning of December and one as Boris was announcing lockdown 3 for the end of the month. Stock was disappearing as I was browsing! Luckily got one from AO.

I know very little about them other than my 10year is happy with hers.

Ummmm, didn't think of the home schooling thing..
Would explain why stock is a little scarce.

Will have a look at Acers, thanks.

I've had an Acer 720 for maybe 6 or 7 years. Bombproof.

Nothing fancy but does what it says and keeps doing it.

one thing to note, chromebooks to have an "end-of-life" after whichyou don't get any more updates. the chromebook wil keep working but the OS will no longer be updated. Mrs NBT has a 3 year old ASUS chromebook that ran out of updates at the end of last year

Thanks folks,
I have a 9 year old Nexus tablet which hasn't had a software update for several years (think its 4 versions of Android behind by 'phone) and still works OK, albeit a bit slowly. It's the batter which is the issue with that particular device so I'm not too concerned about the OS updates.

Will have a look at the ASUS ones and see what's available.

I assume it's best to go for the most Ram and SSD space as possible?

Bought my wife an Acer one about 8 year ago and only just stopped updating last summer. Has been faultless really until a tracker pad button has become hard to use and a couple of the keys have come loose. We'll have another.

Son is using a Lenovo ideapad duo Chromebook. He says it's very good and is using it for remote schooling (A-levels). I think they're around £250...

Avoid ex-educational refurb Chromebooks on ebay - the one I bought was beyond its update life.

Got a refund but it was hassle.

Have 2 Asus Chromebooks - both brilliant for 2 years of heavy use but 1 battery is now failing to hold charge.

Funnily enough, the first chinks in the armour of mine is this. Couple of sticky keys and pad. Probably ribena related on mine....

I've had an Acer 11" CB5 132T for about 4 years and it's flawless, keeps running despite heavy use and rough handling. I thought about getting something with a bigger screen recently but as others have said they are thin on the ground.

If your laptop is still in reasonable shape a cheap option could be a conversion:

Convert a laptop to a Chromebook

So 3 kids at home trying to do school work and sharing one laptop I was just about to buy this from eBay,
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-X360-310-G2-360-Touchscreen-Quad-Core-256GB-SSD-2-in-1-Windows-10-Laptop-/373334307341?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292
I thought I'd better check back on this thread before actually pulling the trigger and have seen the Lenovo linked above, I know the Hp isn't a Chromebook and is a refurb but its only £207 with discount, so my question is which would be the best buy? This one or the new Chromebook linked by snownrock?
Ta in advance

Just ordered an Asus one. Bit more at £450 but updates till 2028! Not the most thrilling spec however doesn't need to be.

@pocketrocket if the kids are doing stuff through google classroom then I’d go for the chromebook. I’d not want to admin a Win 10 laptop for kids.

Had an Asus 302 for about a year now. Easily the best computer I have had.
