Starting a uni course in Sept, so I need to create and edit word docs (no specialist software is involved hence the 2 options) . I have an ipad already, but I haven't tried one of the wireless keyboards with it. Are they quite effective? Also how do they impact on the battery life? I can use Google docs on the ipad to do all my word processing, so...... Would you buy a keyboard or go the Chromebook route??
Bought one of these £7.50 on ebay Mrs uses it a lot on site - when she has a surface to rest it on- she loves it.
- No complaints about reduced battery life -
Oh got an Anker TC820 keyboard for her Mini. It's ace. There's a lot in the range, I'm sure there'll be something suitable.
Logitech bluetooth slim keyboards for iPads are great. Not cheap but know quite a few who've bought them since using mine.
Office for ipad is pretty good as well. Orders of magnitude better than the apple office suite.
Wireless keyboard is excellent. I too use a cheapo from eBay. The lack of mouse support sucks massively though. I use my Nexus a lot more purely for that reason.

Nail. Head. Not so much if you are doing a lot of typing at once, but if you have to switch between apps or type in different windows, it's a pain.
You can get keyboards with built-in trackpads.
I'll give that keyboard a punt. Cheers
The lack of a decent functional editing prog for text docs on the ipad would have me jumping out the nearest window. - plenty progs edit or create em , none do it well. I use apples own and microsofts app for reading and making minor edits on the hoof , i would not like to be writing essays on it.
If it was anything like my undergrad uni course - if it wasnt submitted in word (.doc) format then it wasnt accepted - worth thinking about.
You can use Google docs etc and save them in doc or docx format š
Remember that the iPad wasn't developed with mouse usage in mind - you cannot pair a bluetooth mouse or trackpad to an iPad. There is no pointer that shows up - it assumes you only use fingers.
You can pair a mouse with a Nexus though.
Just because it will export to .doc or.docx doesnt mean that all the formatting will appear the same on the recipiants computer....
I learnt that the hardway using open office at uni.....
Office for ipad has been pretty good so far at preserving formatting.
Worth the office 365 sub as I get pc/mac installs as well and a terabyte of onedrive storage.
Just to throw a small spanner in the works - in my opinion a chromebook is waaay better than an ipad and keyboard (yes, I have both).
But the keyboard is the cheaper option so give it a try.
If it works whoop! If not at least I have a keyboard for my iPad now and am excuse to buy a chromebook lol.
I have an Apple wireless keyboard which I use with the iPad very rarely. I use it only rarely as even with the keyboard IME the iPad is only so-so for large creating documents. If you are going to use it focus on Pages (Apple app) it's much better than Google Docs Word processor and it works with iCloud too, ie you can log into iCloud.com from a windows computer and edit/create the docs and share them with the iPad. In fact that's a better way to create the documents.
Pages will save documents in .docx or .pdf - if you are submitting essays I'd save them in PDF
Finally I detest anything microsoft and certainly wouldn't pay for an office subscription just to get word (excel possibly)
