Based on others reviews and wanting to try a chromebook before committing the family completely, I've acquired a recon C720
So far so good in so far as getting my Google account over and bookmarks, etc. Starting to have a fiddle with google docs.
So now a couple of Q's for the superusers
1/ No capslock or delete key. Are there any shortcut keys to replace them? How about page up and down?
2/ I have created and saved a google doc into a folder I created. Where is it? Is that going to be on the 100gb google drive that the sticker on the front says i have? Or is it in 'the cloud' somewhere? Or both?
3/ Is there a file explorer utility where I can see files in drives and directories to help me understand that a bit better?
Look in the apps, there's a file Explorer there (blue/white icon). Drag it down on to the 'task bar' for quick access.
From there you can find all your files both on the ssd and in your cloud /drive
Right, got that. I don't have an ssd drive (yet) so don't see that, everything I have so far is on drive. And I've worked out to see that offline, I need to specify that on each file (but I think is automatic for my google docs)
You do have an ssd - it's what chrome is installed on and is used for your downloads etc.
sorry, meant an SD card.
"Downloads" is your local drive where you can stick stuff.
"Offline" is your sync'd folder from Drive.
Try and not think about using the chromebook offline, it is designed around being an internet workstation first, with some local functionality second.
"Google drive" is the cloud, not local.
Probably best you check out some google into videos to get happy with this stuff, as this is the basic underlying structure of a chromebook (and some might say, it would have been handy to grasp before taking the plunge...)
ctrl + alt + / will bring up shortcut menu help.
once it's up, press "alt" to see alt shortcuts, ctrl to see ctrl shortcust and alt+ctrl yadda yadda
You will see that alt + backspace = delete.
depedning on your model, alt + "search magnifying glass" ought to turn on caps lock, but it varies. However, if you want to permanently turn the search button into caps lock, go to bottom RH corner, open settings, select Keyboard Settings and viola, you can do it there.
If it is like our Samsung, then click the bottom rh corner thing (wifi symbol) and click on settings. Keyboard settings are in there:-
Click "view keyboard shortcuts" - a picture of keyboard pops up, then hold shift, ctrl or alt etc and it highlights all the shortcuts that go with them (caps lock etc).
edit ^beaten to it!
I get what you say about I should have researched about it before taking the plunge but at £120 for a try out, I have read enough support for them on here and have a mate who swears by his that I'm convinced i can make it work, I just now need to know the nuts and bolts of how.
And in that respect I'm a 'try it and see' rather than 'read the manual' sort of experimenter. So having one in front of me and now trying to find where my files are and which / how I can access offline is my way of doing it.
I will need to access some files offline - I have a long train journey twice a week, I'm not paying for wireless access at their rates, so to be able to access a few files to work on in that period is quite important.
Thanks all for the keyboard shortcuts, that does help.
JUST TESTING!!!
And then off again 😉
Fair enough.
If it doesn't work out for you, PM me, I can always do with another to keep the 4 I have company 😉
I'm surrounded by people who use iPads and for sheer usability (I like a proper keyboard) they are far superior in my opinion.
I use my laptop more and they cant totally replace it but for battery life, weight, speed of bootup they are ace. I can do 90% of my work on one and the whole family use the Chromebook in spite of having all kinds of gadgets around the house.
