Is it only me that thinks it’s such a shame it’s going to be nearly 10 degrees for Christmas!

Worst part about global warming is these warmer winters……no dragging the sledge down to the nearest big hill, no “will we get snowed in near Xmas” or “let’s make a snowman” , we had temps of around -6 around us but no sign of snow…. Just takes a bit of the magic of Christmas away when it’s just another day without opening curtains to a white out or coke frosty weather…

Here’s hoping the forecasters got it very wrong!

Im also disappointed. I spent loads on a pair of schwalbe ice spiker pro, which arrived yesterday, only to have all the ice melt.

I’ve seen enough snow for a few months recently. Cold and fresh will do me fine.

How old are you? What christmases are you remembering?  We imagine Christmas should be snowy (even Australian Christmas cards have snow on them) because even though we're celebrating a Middle Eastern guy's birthday we're actually nostalgic for  the kind of Christmas that Charles Dickens describes. He was recalling the christmases of his childhood. He was remembering the Christmases after the 1815 Mt Tambora eruption which resulted in "the year without a summer" -  lowered global temperatures, worldwide crop failures, famine, millions of deaths... and White Christmases. But even when Dickens was writing Christmases werent snowy anymore

Yes, because I rather prefer the temperature to be above freezing coz my energy bill is expensive plus my feet are freezing.

The weather in the U.K. is normally colder in February, due to the Gulf Stream taking longer to cool down. One of the coldest winters of the last sixty years, in 1963, the snow started on Boxing Day. It didn’t thaw until March. It’s not normal to have snow at Christmas, and if there is, it’s usually just a dusting.

I’m nearly 40 now, I remember super snowy winters, I remember rolling snowmen, being at the bus stop knowing the bus was never going to make it and going back home to play with my friends to my parents horror that they had to look after us!

Especially having a young lad growing up, to him not seeing snow on Xmas day like we used to I mean he doesn’t know any difference until he reads about it in books etc and asks daddy will it snow?
I’ll have to get a snow machine when they’re cheap or go to somewhere Alps’ish over Xmas at this rate 😂

Our forecast for Xmas is 7 degrees and cloudy…

We have more White Easters than White Christmases. As has already been pointed out, snow mostly arrives in January, February. It was only a couple of years ago that we had snow start on Boxing Day and the garden wasn't clear of it until March 🥴

It's more likely to snow at Easter than Christmas. Apparently. I didn't check, could be fake news.

Though when I'm stood for 3 hours marshalling the clubs charity hill climb* on Boxing Day, warm weather would be appreciated.

(Bath Street, Ilkeston, if anyone local wants to come along and cheer the 87 entrants who have nothing better to do. First rider off at 10am.)

I would have preferred to have the recent cold snap over Xmas, for sure, especially as I missed most of it with Covid.

Don't mind if it stays mild for a bit now though TBH.

Where are you lot getting your forecasts from, the lazy sods at the MET Office?

Last week the Daily Express predicted Snowmageddon for Christmas, surely that's all you need to know?

I’m in my 50s - the terrible Winters I remember were Mike and Bernie 🙂

I think you’re remembering snow as being a significant part of winter in your childhood because it was so exciting when it happened - what you forget was it was usually rare and short lived. My niece is growing up in the same era that you’re saying isn’t as snowy as it used to be. A couple of years ago she build a little igloo in her front garden and slept in it. That’s how she’ll remember ‘winter’ when she grows up. There wasn’t an occasion where I could have done that in my childhood

How bizarre. I think I remember 1 single snowy Christmas in my life. Sometime in the 80s IIRC.

Christmas 1981 there was snow on the ground in the Midlands, it's about the only proper 'white Christmas' I can really remember from my younger years--more recently(ish) was 2010, at least here in NI, not sure about elsewhere.

No - well, yes, but this is nearly always the case at least down south. Yes, I do remember snowy winters, but I am actually remembering the occasional snowy event not regular snow. It was mild and wet for nearly all of the Christmases I can remember in 40-something years, and most of every winter. I've never known snow on the ground for longer than a week, it's usually a few days. And two snow events a year was always a good year.

I'm 53.

I grew up in NEE and cannot remember one white Christmas.

I remember it being cold but not with snow.

I remember snow in December...mass snowball fights and sledging, but that was at least 30 years ago...we tend to get snow late January, February and into March these years. I recall more wet christmas days than snowy or dry...I'm not needing a white christmas, but I do miss snow weather in December, but the seasons do seem to be shifting and merging - we used to have 4 very distinct seasons now we seem to have 2 longer ones.

It snowed across much of the country a couple of weeks ago! I don't remember snow settling in Bristol in December in any other year.

Yeah, I think I was in the only place that had snow for 1 day...was rubbish as not enough to make a snowball! Did end up with 4 days of solid ice though, but that has gone as well...

An old article, but proves the point that white Christmases are rare in England.

I think I remember one Christmas when it was very cold, -10C or so in Yorkshire where we were - lots of ice in the river and canal, but only once there was actual snow on Christmas Day in Shropshire, in I think 2004. But there was one other time possibly on Boxing day, my Dad went to hospital on Christmas day and I had to drive my Mum over there on Boxing day on a pretty snowy road.

50s and don't recall a single white christmas down south, might get snow for a day or two around my b'day in Feb, but that's about it.

Haha I’m just being nostalgic, aside from the copious amounts of food, drink, presents and good cheer. Snow would just bring it all together, what can I say I’m old fashioned!!

I suppose you could spread it wider and just say “winters in general aren’t as snowy as they used to be due to global warming” and it is a shame. But here I am driving a diesel car so I’ll STFU as I’m not helping the situation 🤣
