A bit lazy this year so pulled some Taylors 10yo Tawny of the supermarket shelf.

Just opened it, yum.

What's yours?

I dropped massive hints for the Aldi 100 year selection. 😕

I’ve had the Maynards from Aldi before it’s amazing.

It’s a fortified wine, it’s rather nice tends to be sweet.

Aldi Maynard 100 year, Maynard 40 year old and a Kopke Colheita 1987. After this year I deserve decent port.

I discovered port at my Parent's house last Christmas. I ended up drinking rather a lot of it 😳

Mrs K bought home a bumper cheese selection with apple chutney, and cherry spiced chutney.

I simply cannot wait to get stuck into that on Christmas Eve.

Jennings.

Yes, the brewery in Cumbria.
Yes, they do a port.
Not vintage, but tasty.

Graham's 1980 and Taylor's 1983.
It's also the time of year to indulge my preference for 'good' sherry - Apostoles and Matusalem, both from Gonzalez Byass; haven't tasted Noe yet but am tempted.
Had a Pedro Ximenez (PX) after Tapas last weekend so that's leading me to the Noe; dates, 'burnt' toffee, sticky sweet.
Waitrose have a half bottle of a 1983 PX for about £20 - by itself, on ice cream, with blue cheese; what's not to like?

The list is long and distinguished, so, going through the cupboard...
Maynards 40 year tawny
Taylors white port
Kopke 10 year tawny
Some kind of Taylors limited edition that I bought on a whim.
Fonseca 198 vintage
2000 Quinta do Noval Colheita
1997 Niepoort Quinta Do Passadouro
Calum Colheita
Grahams 30 year tawny

And a few bottles of Medeira too.

I bloody love Port...

Usually it's a Graham's 10yrs Tawny but had to settle for M&S' version 😛

My local Aldi seems to be all out of port. The in-laws are going to be upset.

I just polished off the last of my Grahams vintage the other night and have got a bottle of the Aldi 1992 stuff ready and waiting.

Though I like a drop of Port my knowledge is not great so I have one question: What is Tawny Port and is there a right time or occasion to Tawny or not? Or is it just a different style and down to personal preference?

If you're drinking "normal" (not Tawny) vintage port, make sure you drink the bottle fairly quickly. It goes off after a couple of days of opening the bottle.

Tawny port can last a couple of months.

We're abroad this year with a small luggage allowance, so I don't think there will be room in the bag for any. *sadness*.

Tawny port is aged in a barrel, Vintage port is aged in the bottle. Tawny is mellower and nuttier.

IMO, Tawny is nice to drink on it's own, Vintage nicer with cheese.

For Christmas I'm providing Aldi tawny port, which is pretty good for the price. I'm certainly not giving 16 people, most of whose main aim is to get pissed, top notch port. So my last bottle of 1975 Taylor's will be enjoyed by me and my wife between Christmas and New Year.

Great advice thanks. Will have to make sure I get a bottle of Tawny in too!
