been in my present job for 20 years. every Christmas someone will mention a tip box.
I always say that we don't have one, as I don't want to be seen to be scrounging/asking customers for anything. I see it as a bit of a desperate thing. I don't know why, but I just do.
anyway, this year I got overruled and the manager put a box on the counter.
there are only 4 of us. 1 driver 1 manager and me and another bloke on the counter.
anyway, the manager has just checked the box. £750 in there. I am a bit shocked.
I bet you wished you started 20 years ago.
Wow, I think the most we ever got out of a tip box was about £200 between 5 of us.
Most customers just bring in beer. One Christmas I went home with about 10 of them, took me a while to get through that lot. Occasionally certain customer will grab me a bottle of whisky but that doesn't happen often. I'm a desk jockey now so now free beer this year though. 🙁
Merry Christmas 👍
So far this year I’ve got more tips than I did when I was a postie.
We’re not allowed to accept tips and any “gifts” that get sent to us are raffled off for charity twice a year.
Shouldn't you be tipping your customers? Our suppliers have been sending in chocs/ biccies etc to our office and our MD has been dishing out gifts to our clients.
Don't get much at christmas off my customers, the occasional biscuit or two usually, but in the new year I'll be overflowing in chocolates and biscuits as all the women at my customer's offices try and offload all the excess they couldn't eat before starting their new year diets!
All of our supplier gifts go in to a raffle which includes every employee on site. That's about 300 employees to about 40 gifts. In the last 5 years I have won the grand total of a calendar!
Shouldn’t you be tipping your customers?
we do. we buy about 1k in booze and dish it out accordingly.
Our festive cheer consists of several emails politely reminding us to accept heehaw from anyone.
Even a pump manufacturer has stopped sending my yearly desk calendar. Not that it was a glamour calendar mind, just 12 photos of various types of sewage pumps in situ.
@scruff9252 I got a lovely one with photos of low grade Italian made boilers. That went straight in the recycling.
nice one, split it up NOW and go home happy else someone will nick it
Current score is:
2 litre bottles of Vodka
1 litre of Pink Gin
1 litre of Southern Comfort
1 case of Corona
2 bottles of red wine.
Construction industry - still , in many ways, stuck in the 70's
Ms Beej is now working at GP surgery. They're getting lots, it seems a bottle of scotch for the doctor is still the done thing around here.
We have a valeter that washes the company cars at our (fairly big) head office once a week. Lovely chap who always has a smile and a hello, whatever the weather. We've had a jar on reception all week and when he received the envelope he assumed it was a card and popped it in his pocket. His wife opened it with the other cards and nearly fell off her chair when nearly £300 fell out.

Yep- hence we've got 2 sets of calendars for display.
My lad has a paper round Mon-Fri, about 25 houses round the village. He delivers a Christmas card to each one mid December, and picks up £80-100 in tips in the run up to Christmas, effectively giving himself an extra month's pay.
£80-£100 is a months pay for a 25 house paper round these days??
I got between £11 - £14 for about 50 houses!
I was surprised - he gets about £80 a month for about what takes him 15-20 hours work. Covers a couple of miles each morning
i got 25 quid a week nearly 20 years ago (scary)
80 a month sounds like it hasnt really gone up at all .
I guess less papers to be delivered in the modern age.
Christmas bottles haven't been as forthcoming as previous years but had probably 10 wine I think, a very very nice gin gift box from the guy we do all our work for which to be fair with a hand written note meant a lot, and randomly 30 quid of amazon vouchers.
I work in the construction industry as a consultant.
so far we have received absolutely sod all. not even a thank you from most of our clients. barstewards.
Here’s a list of what I’ve received:

I got a £200 gift card from work for John lewis, not my go to shop for anything but Ive gotta be happy with that!
We don't tip our customers nor they us (50/50 split NHS/Universities) but my phone/email is on 24/7 365 for them if they need me, which they often do and appreciate.
I got nowt so went into the warehouse and helped myself to a few bits.
