That's going to be tricky, building and painting all those trees.

I'm probably one of the least experienced on this thread. I'd say be patient, don't compare yourself to some of the guys on here (seriously good!) and be prepared to toss a few finished and part finished models out. Avoid planes with rigging and helicopters, especially small ones. That said I find it enjoyable and some of the results have been pretty good.

#edit: Reasonably good is very subjective...

I’ve been looking to do my Airfix TR4 kit for years now. Haven’t completed any kit since was a kid. But this box sits on the shelf! Maybe it’s time.

Meanwhile, this is beautiful (and not sure if motivating or demotivating!)

Here’s a handy tip. Don’t use plasticine to mark off your camouflage patterns:

It’s a Hasegawa A-7D Corsair II in 1/48

Oh crap!

I've used Blutac without issue.

Saw a guy using some kind of Blu-tack type stuff on a You Tube video earlier that seemed to work quite well. I've been free handing my camo (brush not air) which I think is ok on 1:72 but might look a bit underwhelming on 1:48.

I am only a relatively quick bodger compared to you lot but the ace thing is that my two boys are really enjoying it so we can do many hours on a wet day with no blooming electronics. We have a Handley Page Jetstream, FW190, MK1 Spitfire, Vampire and Jet Provost currently in build between the three of us.

If anyone has any suggestions on starter air brushes or basic air brush tutorials on YouTube etc would be interested in a link or three. 🙂 Kids seem keen to give them a go and I can see some advantages.

@johndrummer

Are you painting with oil based enamel paints by any chance?

I have this airbrush and compressor setup.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Switzer-Double-Action-Airbrush-Kit-Compressor-With-Tank-AS186-Paint-Nail-Tatoo/132166170957?hash=item1ec5b7b94d:g:ntEAAOSwrAFcNFBf

It works pretty well and if you knacker up the airbrush, as I did by not cleaning it properly, you can replace it for £15ish.

No, water based acrylics. I’ve got the bulk of the plasticine off now but the paint is not sticking where the plasticine was. I’m going to give it a wipe down with glasses cleaning wipes, see if that shifts the crap without damaging the plastic or the existing paint.
Otherwise it’ll need a wipe down with either enamel thinners or white spirit. I have no idea what that’ll do to the acrylic paints already there

Blu-Tac next time. I really don’t want to ruin that lovely SAM system.

Btw , re airbrushes - I use a Neo by Iwata double action gravity feed airbrush (it’s my third...) and a budget-ish compressor. You can start with a cheap Revell airbrush kit, single-action with suction feed, and a canister of compressed air. It’s a cheap way to get started with airbrushing but those canisters soon add up to the price of a reasonable compressor.

I’ve tried doing camouflage freehand - works ok on say 1/35 late war German armour,
For example:

(1/35 Panther)

less good on smaller scale aircraft:

(1/72 Me262)

I’ve used Maskol masking fluid on 1/48 & 1/72 aircraft, but when you peel it off, it leaves less than perfect edges.
I believe a paper mask gives a reasonable result but you need to get your sizes right. For example:

(1/48 Spitfire mkI)

@johndrummer that Corsair is going to take some saving, I feel your pain!
I usually cut Tamiya tape into thin strips (so they go round corners) for the edges, then fill the middle bit with low tac painters masking tape. Tesa pink is my weapon of choice at the moment, it's about 7 quid a roll but lasts ages and cuts well.

@garage-dweller look for a cheap compressor on Facebook marketplace, there's usually a fair amount on there, then buy a couple of 15 quid airbrushes off ebay to practise with. When you start spraying thin your paint more that you think, most people have it too thick to start with and it splatters everywhere.

I'm still fighting the Albatross, I nearly put it on the floor and stamped on it tonight! I superglued the wing struts on backwards and had to cut them off, then glued them on backwards again! 😂
I haven't really enjoyed this one but I'm going to finish it even though its getting right on my tits now. I couldn't be bothered to airbrush it and just brush painted it, it didn't turn out to bad, Vallejo is great for that.

One other thing...

Tamiya fine primer is good for 1/24 car models, but I don’t recommend it for aircraft or military vehicles. It fills all the recessed panel lines!

Use Whitetac rather than blutac.

On the subject of camouflage finishes - Spitfires etc were spray painted using large rubber masks to give a standard camo pattern which would have a hard edge. Late war German tanks were delivered to theater in overall sand (or even red primer sometimes) and the crews would spray the patterns on in the field so you get a soft edge.

I think the Corsair is beyond saving 🙁
The layers of paint are already so thick I can barely see the recessed panel lines. Unless I can strip it back to bare plastic, I don’t see how it can be saved. Looks like another trip to modelhobbies.co.uk.
Real shame as I’d already added some aftermarket detail to the cockpit & canopy

Do Kingkit have a second hand one? You may be able to butcher your current one to save the interior.

I’ve ordered some paint remover, I’ll try that first.
Next up - check that the primer hasn’t filled any detail in on my big SAM system. Then a 1/35 BMD4 to finish the tracks for.
A couple of Tamiya 1/48 tanks to finish off

If the paint is acrylic, a soak in soapy water might be enough to loosen the paint. Otherwise, I simply put the model I want to strip into a plastic bag or tupperware box and I'll spray liberally with either oven cleaner or Dettol before sealing the bag/box and leaving for a few days. Dettol is very, very good at removing paint but is nasty stuff to expose your bare skin to for any length of time and will make your workshop area smell like a hospital.

An idea...

We should have a Virtual Model Show where for one day we just post a couple of pictures each of our favourite work without discussion, irrespective of whether we have shown it before.

Next Sunday?

Brilliant idea. I need another wet day or two to finish the very amatuer quality Spitfire. Did you mean 22nd?

Still eyeing up airbrushes and gathering tips to finish it nicely.

I think that’s a grand idea. Off you go 😉

Gives me time to finish a few off:
Tamiya 1/48 Crusader mkIII
Tamiya 1/48 T-55
Tamiya 1/35 M48A3 Patton
Trumpeter 1/35 BMD-4
Meng 1/35 SAM system
And that poor 1/48 Hasegawa A-7D

I'm in, I'll try and finish my Albatross for it but if I can't it'll be one of those that you've seen before. How do you lot manage to do so many, I have trouble doing one at a time!

Any tips for taking decent pics of them with a camera phone?

The main subject of this model is the truck however the kit includes a corrugated iron shack as well and this is where I have started with the build. Only a couple of steps in however thought I would start a build log accordingly.

Things didn't begin too well - I promptly lost one of the tiny crossmembers for the stool so thought I would carry out a 'field repair' on it which I think I have got away with! I have also never tried weathering before however if there is one kit that just wouldn't work all fresh and shiny it's a radiation monitoring station in the hell which was the immediate aftermath of the Chernobyl meltdown so figured I had better at least give it a go.

For the table I simply rubbed a burnt candle wick between my finger and thumb and rubbed this around. It has given it an authentic greasy, dirty look. For the stool I put a base coat of flat aluminium, then a coat of flat brown and then the grey. When the top coat was still not quite fully dried I took an emery board to it to cut through the layers of paint to give it the appearance of a battered metal stool. Overall quite pleased with how it's turned out. A fair while to go yet though and this is not going to be a quick build. I do aim to make each model just a bit better than the one before though and I am leaning new techniques all the time which is fun :).

Looks like I may be able to save this A-7D. Bought some paint remover, it’s cleaned up the fin & starboard side of the fuselage nicely. Now applying it to the rest of the upper surfaces. Underside of wings & belly seem ok, only one layer of paint & no plasticine residue there. Pictures once I’ve cleaned it up

I’m going for the Vietnam camouflage scheme. The Hasegawa kit comes with just a couple of AIM-9 Sidewinders so I bought an aftermarket US Ordnance pack, lots of bombs/missiles/etc

Why do I do this to myself?
Making a kit that isn't bringing me any joy and I decide to carve a wooden propeller from sheets of veneer, it looks good with the spinner dry fitted (forgot to take a pic of that).
Had a disaster with the decals as well tonight, I think I should have varnished them first as they fell apart when I soaked them.

That prop looks lovely

I’ve bought some Camouflage Masking Putty from Ammo De mig Jimenez. Says it does not stain, grease or leave any residue. It better bloody not:

Trumpeter 1/35 BMD-4 masked off & ready for second coat of camouflage colour

The purple stuff is Humbrol Maskol, which I know & trust

I think it’s reusable. It’s still in good condition on the model, but how it reacts to paint remains to be seen

Having said that, I’ve used maybe 1/10 of the tin, if that. It goes a long way, especially if you use Maskol in between.
It’s about £15 a tin, think I got it from emodels.co.UK but could have been modelhobbies.co.uk

Just paid 15.99 for it in my local model shop, bloody tin is half empty! The shop is doing phone orders and you pick it up at a specified time.

What hurt more is that I also bought a Mr Surfacer 1500 black primer aerosol, £10.50!!!
I'm going to stick with Halfords primer from now on.

I don’t normally bother with primer. I used Tamiya fine primer on that A-7D, it filled in all the recessed panel lines. I don’t think I’ll be using that stuff again

I really like the Mr Surfacer primer, especially the 1200 and the 1500, I find that it doesn't obscure any details. It sprays well, especially when well thinned with the levelling thinner.

I've also gone and ordered a cheapo ebay airbrush and some vallejo fillers/thinners/varnishes/colours I need that the kits don't have (mostly for painting the pilots), damn it!

Black camouflage putty does indeed seem to be reusable. I’ve just peeled it all off my BMD-4 & rolled that up into a ball, which seemed to get rid of most of the paint. It’s now back in the tin

Finished the hut of the ICM Chernobyl Monitoring Station kit. Never painted figures before and never attempted weathering etc so this entire build is about learning new techniques and trying out a few ideas I've had.

For the ‘broken’ window I CA’d a broken screen protector behind the main Perspex and then used some balsa to make to repair. I also added a bit of balsa to the tops of the front and side panels to add a bit of depth.

Finally a bit of ash from the coal stove on the roof to simulate the ash and fallout from the reactor fire.

To weather the panels I airbrushed them dark grey first and then in the light grey as per the colour chart but made sure coverage was uneven. The I mixed up a quick wash using brown and black with a good dose of thinners and quickly dipped the panels and the windows in and then let it drain off and dry.

On to the truck next 🙂

Amazing! Can’t wait to see the truck! My mate has a couple of old Russian trucks, one of which is a Zil decontamination unit, basically a big tanker with mobile shower fittings. It’s a very clever and robust bit of kit, not at all what you’d expect from the regime that gave us the Lada!!😀

Yep, finished my Albatross DV yesterday and just got to take a couple of pics now. I need to get outside and take them but it's too windy here (it's always windy in the fens!), finding somewhere bright enough indoors is hard.

Good job on that hut, I like it!
