Gonna be helping out some friends get a website together, and I was thinking... as we're going to go the WP route (self hosted), is it best to choose a theme that roughly does what you want your site to do, rather than one that just looks nice? I'm not scared of getting stuck into the CSS but my thinking is it would be a lot easier to make a functional site look nice, than making a nice looking site work properly by adding/removing lots of features.. if that makes sense?
My recommendation would be to get one through Wordpress itself. They are the best supported and you have less compatibility issues down the line.
I'm having to redo a whole site after choosing a theme that looked nice, but was a pain to work with.
I use themeforest, loads of quality well supported themes. Don't be afraid to pay $50 it will save you an immense amount of time.
Enjoy
