As it says in the blog, there are still a number of issues before it's fully ready but they have gone a long way in 10 years.

Personally, I find it very worrying. Especially with their SSBN fleet as well.

Shut down Faslane on a Yes vote anyone?

The last paragraph is both funny, and symptomatic of something. We should really be proud that, with the expenditure of billions of pounds, a country of 60m people in Europe can play in a willy-waving contest with a country of 1.3bn people on the other side of the world?

That'd be the mothballed Russian carrier that a 'group of Chinese businessmen' bought to convert into an hotel?
It's a projection of power thing, pushing back against the US and Indian navies, and to protect their mining interests in East Africa.

Ben - Do you know how a SSBN works? It doesn't really matter how far away you are.

As for willy-waving, I would consider it more of "deterrence".

there is still only one military superpower

At the moment, but for how long?

I doubt it's quite as one-sided as that graph makes it look. China and Russia will be getting a lot more bang per buck than the US or Western European nations.

for a long time yet, when China gets the bill for treating lung cancer in half a billion smokers there won't be much left for super carriers.

Why would they bother to treat them? I didn't think they really had much regard for the populations welfare.

Chinese people had no say in the selection of their new leaders, highlighting that despite the country’s three decades of rapid modernization, the government remains an authoritarian one-party system that places arbitrary curbs on freedom of expression, association, religion, prohibits independent labor unions and human rights organizations, and maintains party control over all judicial institutions. The government also censors the press, internet, and publishing industry, and enforces highly repressive policies in ethnic minority areas in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia.

Very badly.

However, it was perfect tank country, which really helped the US and British armour.

Also, a lot of it was the superior tactics as well as equipment. A bit like 1940 when the French had more and far better tanks than the Germans but didn't use them correctly.

in the past that might have been true, but increasingly vocal middle class is making changes.

Not too well, but that was a good while ago and Iraq never had the latest kit or manpower capable of using it but that's not my point. Where are most of our consumer electronics sourced from and why?

I though this was going to be some kinda PSA about a cheap alternative for sending forks and rear shocks to Loco, TFT, classifieds et al 🙂

Never mind. I'll live in hope that the solution will come from the East 😯

Lol, is there nothing that can't be turned into a ridiculous scottish independence thread? Never worry, the rUK is committed to keeping your expensive white elephant of insane and immoral mutually assured destruction.

having said that the French can barely mobilise anything at the moment, and what they can is in Africa

Another country that seems to be rapidly increasing it's naval power is India.

Bah! Was expecting something about bird flu.
China is in a bit of a pickle with huge debts, chronic pollution and an ageing population because of the one child per couple ruling, sit back and wait for it to implode.

Chinas blue water navy is based more on defence capabilities. They do however have huge problems around the corner, fresh water being one of them.
