I've unblocked a fireplace in our edwardian house this weekend and plan to use it for decorative purposes only (we have a stove already int he other half of the knocked through room). As well as aesthetics this is a room that occasionally has a bit of a damp whiff/mildew behind furniture, so I thought some extra ventilation would be good. So happy to have open in the summer (chimney has a weatherproof top cap) but thinking ahead don't want all the heat going up the chimney.
Chimney sheep seem to be a good option but not sure if they let some air flow (which would be good) whilst retaining most of the heat. Any other options/recommendations?
Put in a register plate, with a vent in it, pack insulation on top, use a round vent and pipe to take it above insulation level?
God what a sheltered life i have lived! I had NO idea that such things existed and assumed this thread was a typo on "sweep"........
Was expecting to see an alternate use for a Herdwick. Disappointed!
TBH I googled it and I think it solves all your problems, its made of wool, lets moisture through but is insulating. Just get one.

Well I'm convinced!
Yup, chimney sheep should do the job for you.. I have one and it's easy enough to install / remove as required.
We got a chimney balloon for ours. It has an angled edge, so doesn't seal completely & still lets some air through.
On really windy days you can still feel the movement of air, but it definitely restricts it.
I seem to remember considering those chimney sheep things & thinking they were quite expensive compared to the balloon option.
Ours has lasted at least 5 years so far (can't remember how long ago we bought it, but definitely before our daughter was born & she's 5 so a good reference point 🙂 ) and doesn't really lose air over time so it's not like I have to keep topping it up or anything.
Thanks guys and gals

I shoved an old feather pillow up the chimney with a broom stick in our last house. Tied a bit of string to it before putting it up there to allow it to be removed.
Seemed to work well. Didn't notice any damp issues. Kept the room warmer but still got a slight air flow through it.
Not far off shearing time, probably get a whole fleece for a fiver as the wool marketing board pay not enough to cover the shearing.
Is that one of them there ‘flying’ sheep? Gotta watch them, they don’t so much fly as plummet!
