Can't recall who recommended it on here, but read it over Xmas hols - excellent book and really shocked by the last chapter!

Anyway, top STW recommendation.

Anyone read his follow up, Back in the World?

Yeah! Great book (Chickenhawk that is - got it on a 99p Kindle offer).
Wasn't what I expected - very different from most of the Vietnam things I've read, lots of amazing detail about helicopter flying.
Haven't read the follow up.

I believe it was a Harry the Spider recommendation. That’s who recommend it to me when I was after some reading material and it didn’t disappoint. A fantastic book!

If you fancy something equally bonkers with the same level of detail, give this one a go. He’s as mad as a box of frogs, but what a story! You have to a special kind of mental to be a test pilot, especially a naval one

Just finished The Hard Way by Mark Billingham. This one sounds a good follow up on a theme.

It's one of the better books about flying in Vietnam. The follow-up is equally interesting  but goes in a completely different direction. I've read his novel "Solo" also which is a bit derivative Michael Crichton tech thriller but still OK holiday reading.

Read that and First Light, the other classic everyone recommends...

Read it years ago, amazing how many battles you recognise from the various films that have come out over the years.

Still a favourite but never read the follow up, as said its a completely different direction altogether.

Similarly read it following the recommendation on here - truly excellent and triggered an onslaught of Vietnam related literature for me!

Have a go at ‘The Things They Carried’. Reminded me of ChickenHawk and another great book.

This is another 'Nam favourite of mine. Musta read it 20 times. It's a novel but based on the author's personal experiences.

Fields of Fire

Also another great sweeping novel of 1950 to 1976 US history by the same author

A Country Such as this

and another one on the US naval training academy. really enjoyed this one as one of my cousins attended this academy before serving 20 years in the USN
A Sense of Honor

Low Level Hell is also a good read. It's about the Aeroscout pilots working alongside the Cobras, these guys get through some helicopters!

The Mark Baker book is great! I bought Vietnam Inc off the back of reading these. It’s an amazing book, although you do get the sense that it was more than a bit economical with the truth in some of the captions

Chickenhawk is a brilliant read.

If you enjoyed it you might like 'Matterhorn' by Karl Marlantes (Vietnam Vet)

'Vietnam' by Max Hastings or 'We Were Soldiers Once And Young' by Joseph L. Galloway if you have a bit more time on your hands.

The Big Show by Pierre Closterman is an excellent account of WWII air combat.

If you liked Chickenhawk maybe follow up with one of the book recommendation within that book, Street Without Joy?
Just finished 'First they killed my father', a book that both depressed but also gave me a little understanding of the related war in Cambodia.

Loved Chickenhawk and Dispatches; unfortunately 'Back in the World' is out of print and seems to be going for quite a lot on Ebay. Have not read Hasting's book on Vietnam as yet.

I recommend Dear Mom: A Sniper's Vietnam by Joseph T Ward.

Robert Mason (Chickenhawk author) is presently being interviewed of Five Live

It’s with droning, unlistenable dimwit Adrian Chiles, but try and get past that bit

Can thoroughly recommend fate is the hunter By Ernest K Gann.

Inter-war airline pilot and his stories are amazing. Should be a must read for anyone aspiring to be a pilot.
