Just sat at lunchtime at work and a cockerel attacked and ate a mouse!

Never seen it happen before. Always thought that chickens were harmless birds waiting to be barbecued or go into a KFC!

Checked on google and apparently it's quite common.

A lot of birds are very aggressive. They are little feathered dinosaurs after all.

A mate used to keep hens, he put 2 new ones in with the 4 or 5 he already had and the violence and aggression shown by the others was very nasty and not pleasant to watch. They settled down after a while mind and then went back to their normal pecking and scratching the ground stuff.

That'll be why people talk about the "pecking order" then.

"Always thought that chickens were harmless birds"

That's exactly what they want you to think. They're just waiting til they've evolved arms and when they do they'll kill us all. Between now and then they're just going to dwell how gruesome the killing will be and most importantly who they'll kill first. Did that chicken see that you saw him? I'd not bother starting reading that new book if he did.

My friend is a deer stalker. When he's finished skinning and gutting a kill he throws all the yuck to the dogs but his chickens chase the dogs off and go all Hannibal lectern with all the puddings and stringy bits.

They are omnivore. My fokes had some chickens that found a mouse nest, they loved it went mad for them!

^ 🙂

I've seen a pheasant trotting along with a mouse dangling from it beak, though it might have stole it because I didn't see it actually kill the thing.

Sneaky bastard pheasants, always looking at you outta the side of their neck...

At various points our chickens have been spotted eating frogs and mice and they'll go after sparrows or other birds that venture into their run.

Omnivorous mini-dinosaurs is right.

See what I mean; that weird side-long glare.

Much better on a plate, I reckon.*

*Edit : But after knowing what they feed on I'm a little tentative now...

They are actually waiting for reversed evolution - devolution ?

Nice looking bird.

We call him Stumpy. Walks with a Yardie limp.

Thankfully non of it belongs to me - theres a castle behind those trees and it all belongs to him. Looks nice but the drainage is gubbed so from my window its a bucolic paradise but for them its a practically unmanageable swamp which once they've mowed and chased all the leaves around they don't have a decent view of 🙂
