On the Microsoft site it's £118.

Our local computer shop says £180

Amazon has someone selling a code for £58. That sounds a bit dodgy.

We don't want a subscription.

Buying a single MS office programme rarely makes sense.

You should be looking for Office Home and Student, 365 which I know you don't want it cheap, easy and legal.

If you dig about online you should be able to find office 2010 licenses for pennies, they're either obsolete now, or will be soon, but work well enough. Office 2013 which is still current for not much more.

First one do you need MS Excel or spreadsheets? try google sheets if not.

If it's excel which version do you want and how many users?

have a try of google sheets instead; free & works well for most usecases - you can make it work offline as well

Our accountant says we need Excel , they use it and are going to show us how it works.

There's no way we are going off piste when it comes to computers!

It will be one user on one laptop.

This is the Amazon one. In the questions it states that it's a one off payment.

I managed to get office 2016 for £8.26 through work, I've since used the install link on several pcs and laptops, do you want to give it a go?

That sounds dodgy as hell reading it back...

Google sheets works exactly the same as Excel. I imported a complex Excel SS into Sheets and it worked fine, including the pivot tables etc.

I love it as my files won’t get deleted, I can access them on any computer and on my phone too. Brilliant.

You can always use Excel online if you've got a Microsoft account (free) - stuff like Macros & other file formats may not work so well but if it's just for basic sums give it a go.

Jolmes, we'll certainly give it a go.

Does it mean that all the people who have used the code can see each other's stuff?

Im assuming not.

No one can see anything as the programs aren't linked.  Just gives you a fresh install, who knows if it will work though, I cant test it here due to admin rights on work computer 🙁

Have you got kids? All the pupils at our school get an office365 account that lets them install office at home for free.

Zippy, your buying this for business?

That is the home and student version - the discount if for non business users. That is with my software sales hat on.

How much do you pay your accountant? Ask them to get you a laptop, install it and set it up, probably simpler.

The Amazon add is exactly how the old 'boxed' versions of office used to come - they actually come in a box big enough for a DVD in a case, but only contain an license code.

LIC (the codes) are single use - you'll be asked to register for a Microsoft Live account (if you don't have one already) once created you can download the software, it will allow you some cloud elements like online versions of the office suite.

You will then own an 'allowance' for that software in MS speak, meaning you can install it as many times as you like, however only you should own it and if it picks up it's being used on multiple devices at once it will stop working until you de-license some machines. However you own the license forever so you can move it from device to device (it'll work on Macs as well as PCs).

Whilst it's called 'Home and Student' it's not a discounted education or student license, it just means it doesn't come with Outlook.

The only dodgy thing about it is the price. The RRP for it is £120 and it shouldn't be discounted, in fact the margin for Microsoft Partners (of which I am) is only a few % so it's a bit grey at best, but if the code works, it works.

I set up a Microsoft account when I bought my windows phone.

There is an Excel button when I look at my pictures on One Drive. Would that work or will it lead me to a subscription.

Why would anyone buy it if ypu can get it for free?

Our accountant says we need Excel , they use it and are going to show us how it works.

Why does it have to be Excel?

Just get Open Office and save in the Excel format. Excel can also open Open Office formats.

https://www.openoffice.org/

I have never had any compatibility problems with straight forward spreadsheets.

My mistake, previous versions certainly were covered with the not for commercial use stuff.

BTW it really sounds like your accountant probably knows just a little more than you about software, wants you to fill in a spreadsheet and says use what I have cause it came on my computer.

If your doing nothing more than entering some numbers any of the online/other versions will do what you need.

there is an online version which is limited in features, try it you have nothing to loose there. People buyy it to do all the stuff excel and spreadsheets do in the background which is really clever. Accountant is probably using it as an expensive calculator.

Well do what you are told!!! 🙂

get hold of the spreadsheet they want you to fill in.

See if it opens in the Online version and you can do what you need to do.

you can try it in google docs too.

If it doesn't work then buy office.

We've been using the online version of Excel and Word in work for a while and they're excellent. At first we thought it might be okay for 'quick stuff' but I've rarely needed to switch to the software version (usually printing issues, but easily over come) I haven't noticed any missing features yet, but I'm far from a power user.

In fact, for some larger spreadsheets, on old/slow/crap hardware, the online version can actually run a lot better.

Oh, tits.  Is VTT a plug-in for Excel or something?  That changes everything.  You're probably going to need Excel after all as Mike says.

Does anyone in your family work for a largish business?   https://www.microsofthup.com/hupuk/home.aspx?country_id=GB

This has all been foist upon us by HMRC.

Just so that we can send our accounts digitally we've had to spend £300 on a laptop , looks like a £100 on excel and God knows what the full vt costs.

I wish we could.

She stares at the screen, at the little words of green
Tries to do remember what to do next
There's a trace of frustration that crosses her face
Searching for the key she should press
And I would help her if I only know how
But these things are a mystery to me too
And it seems that the Corporate eyes they are watching
She fears for her job and the moments are passing
I stare at her nametag and I think to myself
Both you and I, we never asked for any of this

Every business will have to do it dugitally.

It can't be avoided , regardless of if we have to buy A or B.

Your accountant is not going to want to waste time sorting out problems if you try to cut corners and things don't work. If you buy a new laptop and the latest version of Excel, it should last 4 or 5 years. That's basically £100 per year, which is  £2 per week to do the job properly and not have to worry about it.

And £400 that your accountant, if they're any good, presumably can offset since it seems to be a business expense

As above, you'll likely pay more in accountants' time if you choose a workaround and it causes them hassle!

We can already do the job properly with our ledgers.

We are happy to do it.

The government is making us buy stuff that we could really do without buying and adding another layer of uneccesary techno geeky to piss us off.

Not everyone is excited by computers.

Just pirate an older version like everyone else, or use google sheets or libre office, which are pretty cross compatible unless you're a real spreadsheet power user /wizard.

One of my client has just sent me an Excel spreadsheet, saved as a Macro enabled worksheet. Never seen this before.

Wasted 2 hours Friday afternoon trying to open and used the bl..dy thing.

Office pc....no

laptop....no

Google sheets....no.

Tried to download any fixes/latest updates to Office 10 from Microsoft, would not recognise the product key, went onto live chat with Microsoft and all in all they sent me 3 links that did not recognise the product key either. So looks like they are out of ideas as well.

What now?

Client says 'it runs on our pc's'.

Like ZippyKona said, not everybody is excited about computers, for me its a tool, and the programme should be as simple as possible. Looks like there are multiple layers of carp that I don't need, but some geek in an office somewhere has made it so complicated.

Anybody here go any clues please.

I'm sure you've checked that you can run macros on your copy of Excel. There's a security setting somewhere.(Which is off by default).

Anybody here go any clues please.

Maybe start your own thread for this?

trying to open and used the bl..dy thing.

What happens when you try?  Symptoms?

Office 10 from Microsoft

There's no such thing as "Office 10."  (Well, technically there is, it's the internal versioning number for Office XP.  If you're running a 17 year old version of Office, that's why it doesn't work.  Ask them to save it as an "Excel 97-2003 workbook" and resend it.)

would not recognise the product key

Why do you need a product key to install an update?

Go start a new thread, answer these questions and describe exactly what you're doing and what software you're using (help / about usually).
