At work I'm trying to make our production records electronic, rather than having paper copies which are then transcribed.
They are currently in excel and results are calculated using formulae in the cells. As we add more and more complexity they are tending towards being a ball-ache.
I would like to have 'pad-things' that the production staff could use at the bench (kind of LIMS-very lite). I'm sure I can write the VB code that would drive the various popups and outputs from excel, I just need to demonstrate the effectiveness of the process, so I can convince people to stump up some wedge.
To this end I want to buy a cheap 'pad-thing' and set it up, then if/when it works, I can make a persuasive case for buying multiple decent pads.
What is the cheapest pad that would be capable of doing this? It would be better if it didn't look like complete sh1t when I demonstrate it to the senior team.
Thanks
Matt
Do it as web app and then use an android tablet.
You want to use a tablet for staff to input data into something?
Can't quite understand your question, sorry...
About the only thing that will actually work with (overly) complex macro-driven Excel stuff is a full Windows tablet. The forthcoming Windows 8 RT (ARM-based) tablets won't.
If you need your hands on something right now that will do that, then something like this I guess: http://www.ebuyer.com/291644-hp-slate-2-tablet-pc-lg725ea-abu
Hacking around with Excel or Access doesn't scale at all. Surely this stuff should be in a proper database? Then you just write whatever front-end you like to it - either web-based or in some native app for whatever platform you like.
Do it as web app and then use an android tablet.
This, but if you don't have the dev skills it'll cost you more than lots of tablets.
Unless you get me to do it for you though.. I could use a little work on the side. Email in profile 🙂
Database and Web front end is the best option
the internet has managed to do some half decent forms
Yes, it should be attached to a proper database. In other parts of the company that is exactly what we use, but our processes would use it so lightly and yet still require so much modification that the cost can't be justified.
Matt
Mysql php and apace in a virtual web server cost very little
Yeah, I'll also write it for you for a couple of Gs. Easy.
Oh dear, I hope mikewsmith doesn't work with computers...
Damn you all making me question my approach 😀
From an analytical chemist's perspective it seemed easier to 'automate' our paper versions.
Maybe there is a better way if we start again from scratch. Food for thought.
Molgrips: A couple of Gs is slightly more than I am willing to spend at this moment in time. If I can get someone else to pay????
Thanks All
Matt
A couple of Gs was STW rates, it goes up if someone else pays 😉
I'll do it for a grand and a half - proof of concept kwality obviously. 8)
