I need to get some cash US dollars (but I'm not going to the US). I've just relied on ATMs and my credit card for as long as I can remember. Where does one go to get currency at a decent price?

M&S has a good rep amongst High St places.

Moneysupermarket will no doubt have good advice.

Assuming we're talking a few hundred quid, just go to the place nearest to you - Post Office, M&S, travel agent, bank, whatever. The rates will all be within pence of each other.

if you need to pay somebody in dollars then the rates on a revolut card are better than the high st.
you can also set up an alert for a particular rate.

Like MrSmith says, Revolut is pretty darn good. Your are limited on cash withdrawls, but being able to access rates near the bank rate, and commission free, is fantastic for those who only occassionally need bits of a particular currency.

Believe it or not some ASDA stores do FOREX at very competitive rates.

Another one for Revolut here. If you need actual cash in the UK then no good but for getting cash out over there, paying people (from wherever to wherever) and getting cash out over there it wins.

https://travelmoney.moneysavingexpert.com/ - stick in the amount, how soon you need it and whether you want to collect/deliver and press go.

M&S are very good value in my experience - Year before last I went to draw a couple of hundred Euros. Cashier handed me my euros in one envelope along with a second envelope with 500USD in it.

I Called when i got home to notify of the error and got a really good bottle of wine as a thank you for my honesty.

Click and collect usually gives a better rate than just walking into a branch.

If you are around central London try https://www.bestforeignexchange.com/
Book the rate online and if it's better when you get there just forget that you booked online.
If not John Lewis Forex let you collect next day from Waitrose and their rates are amongst the best.

I’ve always got a decent rate in Sainsbury’s.

A lot of the high street places will price match anyway in my experience.

I went on www.money.co.uk to check out rates then collected locally. Better rates if you have delivered generally

Simon Calder reckons better rates when you get there.
