Anyone got any recommendations for a cheapish (but not crap) smartphone? Needs to take micro SIM cards and be unlocked. Acer Liquid Metal running Android gingerbread seems to be a decent spec.

No it doesn't. They're backwards-compatible, you just need a little plastic adapter.

Samsung galaxy s on vodafone from quidco. Very cheap. No upfront cost, £13 a month for 18 months and they gave me £70 cash back, so works out at under a tenner.
