Arrrggghhhh! Phones are doing my head in!

FOr years I've used a Nokia 6310

[img] [/img]

It has begun to give up the ghost, e.g. the power key has gone walkabout to I need to poke a key or something inside to turn it on, and it randomly switches itself off. On the flip side, I can charge it once a week and it will get a signal almost anywhere

As it's in such bad nick I was very lucky to be able to borrow a Samsung Galaxy S off that nice xherbivorex chappy which has let me realise that although it's nice, I don't really get the whole smartphone thing and if I didn't have one I could happily manage.

One thing I do fancy though is a reasonable camera - but it seems that if you want a reasonable camera nowadays, you are talking about smartphones.

so, what relatively cheap phone should I look at? Ideally sub £50 if new, or if you have something going as you're upgrading, talk to me about it....

I'm with you on this one. I don't get the need for a smart phone (It would be a different story if I actually had one).

My current weapon of choice is the Nokia C1.

£36 well spent. And when I break it, scratch it, drown it, stand on it or leave it in the pub I won't cry.

The camera is, however, shite.

I had a Nokia 5210 (builder's phone) for ages - when it gave up the ghost, I dragged myself into the 20th century with a 5140 - it has a camera (pretty shonky one though) but is pretty knock proof and bounces well.

worth a look.

Vodafone do a smart phone on PAYG for 50quid.
one of our kids has one, seems absolutely fine and can do pretty much anything my smartphone can.
every network seems to still do something like you had for between 10-15quid

I feel your pain! The 6310 was a brilliant phone. I bought a smart phone, couldn't get on with it so this is the easy-to-use replacement:

I have a Nokia 2730 and a 5530 in my desk draw. My former work and personal phones both redundant after I got a blackberry. No chargers.

Swaps for some bike related bling?

I have about half a dozen nokia chargers, assuming they haven't changed in years so that could be a goer. not much in the way of bling going spare though - tyres, juicy 3 disk brakes, a couple of saddles

maybe a nice emmyjane handbag for your missus? or yourself, even?

You can also get a smartphone on 3 for £50 + £15 top-up - Samsung Galaxy Europa. Not half bad for the money.

Bump - uwe-r, talk to me, there's no email in your profile. Or anyone else with something in the drawer?

research on behalf of my wife (needing a similar phone) throws up phones like the Nokia 1616 and 100, around the £20 mark unlocked, new - possibly less if you get one through your provider..

I inherited one of those from a dude who was first across the lines in 2001 to train Afghan intelligence. After what was I assume two fairly accident-prone years, I abused it for another two years in every bar in LOFHox and NYC until I got a Treo. Good times.
