[Closed] cheap garage flooring ?

We have an integral single garage, which is full of bikes, some shelving units, family stuff, garden stuff. It's quite well organised, bike stand etc. House is 12 yrs old and I painted the concrete floor initially with proper International floor paint, and have redone it in 1/3 sections a few times since. It needs some attention as a few flaky bits now and I look longingly at these pictures of floors with decent vinyl or matting coverings. I haven't measured area but it's probably max 5 m long and 3m wide or so, so maybe around 15m2 of coverage required.

Any pointers, recommendations for something that is durable and wont cost the earth ?

Carpet tiles. 50 for a single garage. Cost you about £20-30 on ebay.

Saw this stuff in Halfords the other day, was very tempted, but garage needs a big-ol clear out first

I'd be looking for a spare bit of vinyl offered cheap in a design/colour that maybe isn't that aesthetically pleasing but fine for a garage. Unless you're regularly dragging furniture/heavy or sharp objects across it, most vinyl will be fine for the job.

Costco do massive rolls of vinyl with the cross hatch embossing. Not sure of cost but it will be on their website.

I got similar stuff from machine mart, but it's grooved. I wouldn't bother with the grooves as it means you can only sweep in one direction...

If you aren't fussed about the colour/pattern you can get top quality vinyl tiles like amtico or karndean pretty cheaply online as end of line or left overs from a job.

DezB and CG, the flooring you have linked to is just foam. It will keep you feet warm but it compresses permanent quite easily and rips readily too. I have some in my garage which I used for putting the motorbike on but the stand just tore it up. I now use it to go under the rowing machine to soak up the sweat.
Short pile carpet tiles like Weeksy has is ideal, don't use old carpet as it is just like a new housing estate for bugs.

Carpet tiles? Wouldn't you then have to hoover the garage?

Following this thread I was able to have a very thorough clear out of the garage and get it sorted out.

I then bought these heavy duty vinyl floor tiles plus edging strips and they've made a massive difference to the garage.

They're easy to fit, easy to keep clean and they're warm under foot.

The items in the link above are usually on an auction on big dugs ebay store so if you do want these don't buy on 'buy it now'. Think I paid about £80 a pack and I needed 3 packs plus a few loose tiles.

Feel free to drop round for a look if you're ever in Killie.

Edit: and I'm in a modern house with integral garage so will be the same size roughly. I was the same btw way, originally painted with garage floor paint, started to flake, etc. Was going to repaint but this is a much better solution.

at least 3-4 times a week. Think of my garage as being other peoples living rooms 🙂 a mate saw mine for the first time yesterday and seemed quite impressed.

Mrs Weeksy even bought me my own 'James' hoover which is for the garage only 🙂

My garage is a shoes only place!

I have sawdust, cobwebs, dirt, dust, metal filings and leaves on the floor. It's actually not airtight (and there's a minor leak), but it means nothing gets damp as it's got plenty of ventilation!

Just looking at Gary_M's stuff -

Bigdug 5 Square Metres @£119

Halfords 1.2x1.8= 2 and a bit @£10

Using my rudimentary maths, I believe Halfords is nearer the "Cheap" mark that the OP requested!
What's the betting it's the same stuff too...

It's not. Halfords stuff is thin and a bit rubbish, big dug stuff is solid and not rubbish. Halfords ones are 7mm thick, big dug ones 14mm thick for example. And one is a tile, the other a mat.

So I guess if you believe apples and oranges are the same thing because they're both fruit then yeh the big dug product is exactly the same as halfords product 🙂

What the betting one is a firm durable vinyl floor covering and the other is a cheap camping mat jigsaw.

Depends what your idea of cheap is and the big dug tiles fit the 'recommendations for something that is durable and wont cost the earth' request. Under £250 to floor a room isn't bad.

been away at a meeting and back to all these suggestions - good old stw 🙂

a lot in there to get me thinking , thanks.

The stuff you linked to Gary looks great, albeit top end of my budget, so will have a look around at it and the less expensive options

Find your local carpet and vinyl companies. Go speak to them and tell them what you're after ie size and commercial vinyl (as an example). They might have offcuts that size or know of jobs coming up that might have the same.
I did this a few years ago and was happy to wait a month or so. It led to 3 bedrooms and the kitchen all having top quality carpet / vinyl at rock-bottom prices.

The problem with vinyl is that if Iain's garage floor is anything like mine the concrete will be a bit on the lumpy and pitted side. Putting vinyl down on that will look rubbish.

Iain, I've got the Halfords foam stuff (it's branded Rolson) it's fine for a garage that will mainly be holding bikes.

No it probably won't take heavy abuse from parking cars or motorbikes on it but for pushbikes its fine. Its also cheap enough that I can replace the oil stained tiles when I inevitably get brake or suspension fluid spilled somewhere.

I've had mine in a year and some oil stains aside there is no physical damage to any of the foam tiles. It gets a weekly brush out and a very occasional pass with a mop

At the moment mine has a bike box that has been cut open and laid on it. catches oil drops and is soft enough yet robust enough, and then easily disposable when you get a new bike.

But it's looking a bit tatty now, as i haven't had a new bike for some time. Hmmm...... N+1, just for the cardboard?

Go to your local carpet shop and ask for carpet that they have taken up
they will be happy to give you some as they pay to get rid

when its got dirty just repeat
most carpets we take up are still good for this usage
and guess whats on my garage floor

They arrived today. I haven't tried to lay them yet but they look exactly as described and certainly a but more robust feeling than the thinner Halfords ones. Will put them down at weekend.

They look good Iain. I have a car in the garage so that's one of the reasons I went for a more robust floor.
