You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
say you had 2k to spend and wanted something fun for the weekend but could also do for a bit of city driving during the week - what would you consider? oh, got to be soft top too...
Looking at mk1 mx5, 3 series BMW.
Mr2 have too small a luggage space
mgtf - don't want a mg!
What else is there?
From what you've said an MX5, and there's an MX5 in the classifieds at the moment that looks ok...
(Not mine btw)
Aye, that's Luke's. Its a mk 2 though and I'm in Bristol. Did consider it to be honest!
If by weekend fun you mean an involving drive, then I'd say you've probably got your shortlist right there.
You could possibly get an Alfa V6 Spider for that price if you were happy to sacrifice handling for 'that' sound.
Oh, and of course there's the 2.8 BMW Z3?
Audi TT?
Maybe struggle to find one for 2k, but I have seen them for that sort price before
Assuming you mean E36 convertible then I'd avoid. Nice cars, I had a 323i convertible, but the lack of a roof makes them very flexy. Definitely not a sports car. Still nice as a summer cruiser.
If you mean Z3 then carry on. Although they're surprisingly tiny inside. I don't fit in them even though I've had loads of E36/E46 over the years that are fine.
Street Ka
I'm flogging my mk1 due to rust costs.
Thinking of a warm.hatch as its replacement (in time) Sportka, Swift, Panda 100 all look good.
Lots of people overlook MR2s in favour of the MX5 but I've always preferred the Toyota. You'd get a decent one from a club owner for that - upto 170bhp from a UK car, lots from from an import turbo. Brilliant steering, amazing handling (although an early one will try to kill you if you overdo it).
You can spend insane money on fancy tuning bits from Japan, but a later car with fresh shocks and decent tyres - rears are an unusual size so some people either fit cheap tyres, or fit a more normal size or worse both - not a great idea on a fast mid-engines rear wheel drive car and they're lovely to drive.
We've had various mx5s and a mk 3 mr2. The mr2 was better, handled better, the layout felt more exotic and it was better put together. The storage space is an issue but there's enough, weekends away just pack in carry bags or sift rucksacks rather than a holdall, and pack an iron. Very sad when ours went. It was prefect for what it was. We used it in all weathers despite being told it would be shit in snow. It was poor in those conditions but drivable.
Mk2 MR2 has *a lot* more useable boot space than the mk1 MX5. I've had both. I preferred the MR2, although that was cos it was a bit quicker. The MX5 is perfectly suitable for a weekend/occasional commuting car.
For £2k? I'd look on mr2oc.co.uk for a cheap turbo (I had a very respectable mk2 rev3 turbo t-bar as a summer runabout for £1000) or well looked after n/a. FWIW, I got exactly the same mpg (31) from both the mk1 MX5 and my first (not £1000 runabout) MR2 turbo, so don't assume more power = woeful economy. The £1000 one was closer to 25 mpg.
Mx5. Mk1 1.6 - cheap to buy, cheaper to insure. Easy to keep and maintain. Mind you, it's getting so that you have to be careful with finding a decent one - lots of badly done turbos, hidden rot etc.
But then I'm biased. Been working on mine for coming up for 2 years now and it's much changed from the stock 1.6 JDM import she started off as...
I hope so that is gopping.
What has happend to that poor car?
Pfft! Everything mentioned so far would look at home parked outside Toni and Guy. Are you going anywhere nice on your holidays? 😆
Thanks all- matt reconsider the Toyota... hairdressers comment expected and the reason why I'm looking for other ideas 😉
Motorbike.
Ford Puma?

Just tedious and unoriginal comments from people in skodas or mpv's. Who could care what other people think really.
Why do you need a big boot?
Suzuki Cappuccino, drives better than MX5 and faster
Can honda s2000's be had for 2k yet? There must be some around that price now, i sold mine 9 years ago for 7k,sso they must be round that sort of prce these days.
Thats what id go for.
Buy my mx5 you fool! Bristol is no distance.
We considered the MG but they are keen on popping head gaskets apparently and that put us off. The MR2 was much more to insure, which given what mileage you will be doing may not bother you.
With 5s the Mk1 is more basic inside, despite being essentially the same car. Both are a lot of fun and when we buy again we may go for a 1.6. Check to see if the sills have been done on them, and check carefully for.rot. There is little to go wrong engine wise and most jobs are simple to do yourself. Parts are cheap and abundant and the owner's community is.strong and very helpful. Make sure the cambelt has been done at the right interval (I think 50 or 60,000 miles) and isn't due as you'll need a new water pump at the same tim.
Sadly I think s2000s are on the up again because I would love one of those.
Will a three series not be much more expensive to fix should it go wrong?
The MG was never a sports car
