Following on from my previous S2000 thread I've just spied a very good condition car for a very good price, but it's that price for a reason. There is a valid V5C and it has passed an MOT every year since 2005, that's as far as history goes, but HPI shows the plates as belonging to statutory write off and so potentially can never be re-registered or driven on the road again. It appears to be a clone of a different car that was a statutory write-off back in 2004. Either that or it's the original car and the clone was written off. Either way, as it stands I don't think it can be legally driven despite DVLA saying they don't consider it to be written off.

Anyone have any ideas how you'd go about proving a car is roadworthy and getting it back on the road legally? An SVA test? Is there a government body to appeal to re: statutory write offs? Or is it a lost cause?

first thing you'd have to do is indisputably verify the identity .

once you have verified the identity that determines the next step

One things for sure - it will for ever show up in the HPI so it'll never be an appreciating classic as those don't come with questionable past.(unless its the last* of its kind)

I've just checked it and it's come back clear. Never written off, never stolen, no colour changes, no outstanding HPI, nothing. MOT history is complete as far back as records go and it just shows general wear and tear things. A head scratcher.

Could it be the plates are fine and the write off is linked to the VIN? In which case it could well be on cloned plates.

my alarm bells are ringing.

how ever - is it private plates?

have you seen the VIN - does it look original , is it in the right place or is it a plate thats been put on (seen some shonky shit on ebay when it comes to ringer land rovers)

Is it possible the VINs been miss read ....

advice still stands - tread carefully , you need this dialed before you buy or itll only be good for parting out especially once you start asking questions to the relevant bodies alerting them to its existance.

+1 on something isn't right.
I'd want to see VIN and engine number first hand.
It could also be that DVLA or previous owner have made a mistake.

I own an Irish plated car, not directly relevant but I occasionally get shit through certain registers as it's not the original plate (originally Irish then private then another Irish) Check it's history and if it has an Irish plate somewhere it may be the source of trouble.

I bought an Mercedes CL AMG600 with a horrendous history.

1st owner for 3 years. Sold it to his wife who had it for 3 years. Sold it to their accountant. So far, so good.

Accountant had a heart attack and decided to recover in a condo in Florida so asked an internet dealer to sell it. He did sell it - 9 times simultaneously and it was recovered from a shipping container in Folkestone.

I got a 3 inch thick folder of paperwork with the car to prove it was legit and was quite worried it might be a dud but paying £12,000 for a car that should have been about £30,000 at the time seemed to good to be true.

Good news is that it was legit and I sold it on three years and 50,000 miles later for £10,000. Sometime good does happen

I guess it's a moot point since the seller has gone silent after I asked for photos of all the VIN plates.
