Can you just drive up to the Channel Tunnel, buy a ticket and get across to France with your car, or do you need to pre book?

Yep, you can, but I'd expect this to be a bit pricey.
EDIT: It's a doddle to pre-book though. And if you pre-book the [i]latest[/i] possible time you might travel, you can always chance turning up a few hours early and seeing if they'll let you on an earlier train.

Yes.
I think it's bloody awesome, everytime I use it. Drive on, around 45 minutes later, drive off. I did the crossing yesterday evening.
