Sometimes, after being banned for life, certain posters appear to be able to return with new names with impunity. Haven't quite figured that one out yet.

You shouldn't need to change the name that your subscription is attached to - just don't use that login to post if you don't want to

Nice treatment after subscribing for ten years.
Ban the account instead of sorting it out.
I just want to change my forum name nothing underhanded going on.
rob.
Have you got nothing better to do...

Thing is, Stu. If they did it for you, then they would be inundated with requests.

Your best bet is to get banned, and then come back in with your new nickname after a few weeks.

They seem fine with that.

Each time I think about a subscription, I see something like this then keep my money in my pocket.

If they allowed PMs and moderated a bit more heavily, that might just make me subscribe.

Avatars...now there's an idea.

Oh, and another one...how about we assign certain tags to forum users? It would only be for moderator use.

I think being banned for life was a right of passage for every serious STW poster?

There are posters here today that have been banned for life a few times.

I'm one of them.

Ive been saving "Lord StJohn Farquar Badgerf***er" for the right thread. Maybe I should have rolled-out "Captain Chalkie Buzzardblunderbusser" the other day to give some much-needed gravitas to that thread....

IP ban. It also means anyone else that uses your internet will be banned too.

I've IP banned people on a forum I moderate & inadvertently banned all of the local university.

IP ban

*switches router off. switches router on. is un-banned*

Switches iPhone / Galaxy on. Is ip-un-banned.

Not that its ever happened to me but I dont think there's a realistic way of doing it unless sites get and record MAC addresses or similar.

What happens if a premier member gets banned?
Do they get a partial refund? 😆

If you have a genuine reason, they will let you change your name. Need to email the web gurus and explain, and they'll set up your new name.

So I've heard. You've not heard it from me. Or from my previous username.

Depending on how they perceive the fairness of their ban they tend to go for the - sod that I'm cancelling my all singing all dancing subscription, get their money back (quite quickly to be fair) and never turn a page of the mag again.

Access to the forum is not part of our subscriptions. If you are banned from the forum you are not banned from the premier features of the site like the mag archive. You can still reduce the ads and post on front page stories. You just can't post on the forum while you are banned.

As has been said, we don't ban IP addresses as that's clumsy and results in collateral damage. We ban accounts (very rarely people) If duplicate accounts are reported to us or we spot them then we act. If anyone starts a new account while banned then we ban the account and extend the original ban. But we can only do that if we are made aware of them.

And I'll take this opportunity to point out that traditionally at this time of year all bans from say, now will be for the rest of the year so that we can all have a break from moderating to get some turkey and family time 🙂
