We're supposed to be heading to the UK from France for a couple of weeks at the end of next week. Meant to be travelling on the Amsterdam to Newcastle ferry and then back via Ireland (after visiting family in Scotland and NI).
It's all looking pretty dodgy at the moment.
Some stats:
Country | Population (M) | 7 day moving ave new cases 10/08/2020 |Daily new cases/M pop.
Spain | 47 | 3,704 | 78.8
Netherlands | 17 | 532 | 31.3
France | 65 | 1,640 | 25.2
Switzerland | 9 | 156 | 17.3
UK | 68 | 860 | 12.6
Just got back from a trip to Dieppe, no social distancing with the public whatsover. I'm not surprised the infections are going up. People just walk straight at you, no intention of moving, we had to keep going into the road or change direction to keep distance from people. We also went onto the beach and a couple came and set up right next to us. I sat on a small bench by myself and thought no one would come and sit next to me ... yep, 2 people came and sat on the same bench busy talking into their phones. Most shops and some bars and restaurants were on the case but the public no, you wouldn't think anything had changed. Large groups of people gathering on the beach, there's a fair on a large green opposite the beach and that's full of people all interacting. I get the impression that the French are just carrying on their normal social lives as if nothing has happened.
Conversely in Morzine it seems (unless in a bar...) folk are wearing masks, cleaning hands and keeping reasonable distance.
That said, eldest_oab has decided to head home early...
I've been considering a France road trip for the October holidays - from Scotland.
I think another week on a Scottish island is looking more sensible 🙁
I get the impression that the French are just carrying on their normal social lives as if nothing has happened.
Not really like that in Paris just now - lots of masks in streets and 99% in shops, people swerving to avoid you etc.
I was just up the coast from Dieppe a few weeks ago and to me, the French seemed to be quite sensible about it all.
If you look at excess deaths over the Covid 19 period, compared to last year England has had about 40 times the number that France has had. (Yes, not twice the death rate, not ten times as many dying, but FORTY times as many dead). So for every French person dying because of the covid 19 outbreak 40 English die......
It's happening
BBC News - France to be added to UK quarantine countries

Chances of people complying with the quarantine?
Great way of getting the exams **** up off the front pages...
Entente about to become non-Cordiale.
I cannot imagine there will not be retaliatory action by Macron.
As for 14 day quarantine - yeah, right; as others have said, it isn't policed so won't happen
Bon.
Insert Gallic shrug here
Chances of people complying with the quarantine?
I'd say minimal, but the inevitable reciprocal quarantine while in France is going to be harder to ignore I would imagine.
EDIT: Also, anyone got any hot tips on any kind of holiday accommodation in the UK in the next two weeks that is not an insane price 🙁
Great way of getting the exams **** up off the front pages…
They are too late as per normal, see the recession article has fallen off the page on the BBC app!!
As for 14 day quarantine – yeah, right; as others have said, it isn’t policed so won’t happen
My daughters went to to Majorca to stay with a friend - they hardly went out but when they came back they took themselves off into their rooms to self-isolate with no parental input.
At the end of the isolation we did a home covid test which came back negative.
If you go to a country with a significantly higher infection rate would you really not self-isolate when all your friends know where you've been?

I would, many wouldn't. Thank Dominic Cummings.

My wife got a call from some government agancy the day after we got back from Gran Canaria. They asked if she was observing the quarantine and if she knew what that entailed. None of the other 3 people on the trip were contacted.
kelvin - merci; tu fais mon point.
It’s inevitable.
Why does the French reciprocation actually matter so much?
So looks like I'm stuck in France until the end of my holiday.
No capacity on the Tunnel etc to come home.
Fair enough.
Why does the French reciprocation actually matter so much?
Because I could have easily gone to France, enjoyed my time there and returned to stay home for 14 days, now I'd have to stay in when in France, which kind of defeats the point of going in the first place.
France has a lot of nice places to visit though. Whereabouts are you now?
We’re still missing France… but made the right call. It does mean that the kids won’t see their grandparents this year now though, as they’re out there now.
I'm in France coming back next Sunday. We are coming back early so my son can quarantine before starting high school.
The infection rate here is 0.3 per 100k. At home its 7 per 100k and the government will subsidise me to sit all day in oldham Wetherapoons where the infection rate is 100 per 100k and return to home without self isolating.
We are camping, not eating out only going inside for shopping, everyone here is following the stricter guidelines than at home.
We've used the open air Aires for breaks when travelling and stayed in our cabin on the journey over.
I'm not a risk manager to given there only two active cases in the entire department of 650000 people the chances of catching it are extremely low. That might answer the question why people might choose not to strictly stick to the blunt instrument of a blanket quarantine when returning.
Chances of people complying with the quarantine?
Eldest_oab lands [s]today[/s] Saturday at 4pm, just as the regs come in...
So, early plane = freeeedom?
Late plane = stuck in his room for a fortnight?
Eldest_oab lands today at 4pm, just as the regs come in…
It's 4am Saturday.
Sorry - I meant saturday...
Two weeks in his room then. You have Unlimited Broadband, yeah?
Well this is annoying. Too late to cancel my air bnb.
Anyone fancy risking the quarentine and staying in my air bnb in the Jura mountains. If I cancel now, i think i get 50 quid back, so if someone wants to offer me more than that...
Why any other country would allow the english ( not Welsh, Scottish or Irish ) into their countries beats me, financial probably. This is just pure distraction politics again. PPE, exams, Brexshit, you take your pick, but that dirty little Cummings is at it again.
Two weeks in his room then. You have Unlimited Broadband, yeah?
It's okay, the toilet roll supply chain is back to normal levels.
Wife and son flying to the UK Today. They are due back in France next Sunday with sister in law and her family. I guess they won't come now.
Has anyone said, "We've come on holiday by mistake."
I've just walked through kings cross/st pancras and there's TV cameras everywhere no doubt waiting to interview disgruntled returning holiday makers
Two weeks in his room then. You have Unlimited Broadband, yeah?
There's lawns to mow and outside of the house to paint...
Whilst excess mortality in France is higher than normal, England is far ahead based on number of standard deviations from the mean.

Aye we've just this morning cancelled our Dordogne trip starting next week. 14 days quaranteen on return wouldn't be a problem but likely retaliatory 14 days inbound and potential implications of FCO's 'essential travel only' dictat swung it for us. Suppose it means I can spend the holiday budget on bicycles now so not all bad 🙃
Why does the French reciprocation actually matter so much?
It Doesn't:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53772735
We'll be spreading our own CV19 infections thankyou very much, and don't need any help from the French!
The French campsite I was staying at issued a ban on any UK visitors from today. It's a popular campsite near Annecy, so I expect a lot of others doing the same.
I know it's tit for tat, but you kind of think the reciprocation is kind of cutting your nose off to spite your face. It's going to hurt the French tourism big time.
It turns out that the hapless Grant Shapps tweeted that the quarantine applied from 4pm Saturday, not 4am. People who've bought tickets for Saturday daytime not very impressed...
Why does the French reciprocation actually matter so much?
When you've booked a slot at dignitas it ****ing matters, on the upside my sil has been given only 6 to 12 months anyway, hopefully will only involve a more convoluted drive for my brother ☹️ worst possible timing.
Edit: probably not thinking straight on ramifications, bit emotional
Sorry to hear that DickyBoy.
So what are the risk of travelling to France?
- travel insurance not valid
- will have to quarantine on return
- campsites may be closed
- France may impose 14 days quarantine on arrivals from UK
What i am missing?
I'm half tempted to still go next month....
Well, the news today whilst not unexpected is still a massive PITA.
I'm due to head to France for a week on the 26th to help my parents finish packing their house up, give my mum a bit of a break (my Dad has fairly advanced Motor Neurone) and bring them home with my Brother.
I'm basically i quarantine myself already, only really leaving the house to walk the dog, in preparation as C19 would likely kill my Dad.
Quarantine on my return doesn't really matter, but quarantine on arrival in France means i need to leave on Wednesday so we can all leave on 2nd I think.
Considering I will only be seeing my parents, who I'm actually bringing back, what are chances of being stopped leaving France as I haven't stayed for 2 weeks to quarantine?
My head hurts...
Sorry to hear that Dickyboy. It's an upside-down world where that trip is the only legal path open to your family. Really feel for you all. No more moaning about not seeing our family this year from me. Perspective.
What i am missing?
I’m half tempted to still go next month….
France WILL impose a tit for tat quarantine. So it's a question of whether you are willing to spend your holiday locked inside with food being delivered to you. Not my idea of a holiday.
Carry on regardless, return journey via rubber dinghy from Calais. Actually, I wonder what would happen if you did that for the outward journey?
Seriously though, I do wonder how this government can be so utterly shambolic. A few hours notice for this, less to re-introduce restrictions in NW England, pulling the rug out from under holidaymakers in Spain, etc, etc. All a reaction to the mis-understanding of data. But its either that or they will throw anyone under a bus for a cheap political gain.
DickyBoy, deeply sorry for you and your family, hope you can work something out.
One wonders if this is really a sort of punitive/deflective strategy from the UK "government".
One wonders if this is really a sort of punitive/deflective strategy from the UK “government”
I don't . . .
Look! Squirrel!
Well, a dining room table can only accommodate so many dead cats being piled up on it, so you'll need to start putting dead cats on your neighbors table too.
What i am missing?
I’m half tempted to still go next month….
The French are not a soft touch .unlike our shower of useless **** ups They set up road blocks and check paperwork during their lockdowns
So don't reckon you'll be just ignoring quarantine over there.
One wonders if this is really a sort of punitive/deflective strategy from the UK “government”
Or part of the bargaining strategy during Brexit negotiations? Sort of "we can hurt you too" power play?
It definitely smacks of that. It's as though they're trying alienate some of the key EU states to sabotage an incredibly long and complex negation of some sort....
They still haven't implemented quarantine for UK arrivals.
It is still voluntary: https://uk.ambafrance.org/COVID-19-UK-and-French-travel-and-quarantine-measures
Bit of a result from my air bnb host - he didn't have to refund us anything under the policy, but he offered to do the lot!
Need to work out how to send him some french amazon vouchers as a thankyou? Anyone know how?
Why vouchers? Just ask him to keep 50€ back when he refunds..... 🤔
