Literally cracking bit of TV (cracking chest open) open heart surgery from the comfort of your arm chair.

The Consultant makes it look so easy

Jesus, so Channel 5. Did they make the surgeon stop for ad breaks?

No very little intervention by the TV bods.

Although I have to say they did delay the first incision to coincide with the return from an ad break

I missed the heart one but the knee one last night was strangely compulsive viewing. The amount of kit involved is mental and the skill of those involved is pretty impressive to watch (even though at times the hammering and sawing looks a bit medieval!).

Im suprised they have manged to get a surgeon to work on a routine elective case at that time of the evening. Working in a hospital you rarely see a surgeon outside our unless they are in ED or called in for an emergency case

With the heart op I didn't see them sew up the pericardial sac, did I miss that or don't they stitch it back up???

Some do, some don't. There is debate over the risk vs benefit of doing so.

I watched the heart one.

very sobering to watch when you have been in that situation.

made me feel a bit odd.

You obviously don’t work in a major trauma hospital. Major Trauma centres operate pretty much 24/7 even at Consultant level.

Yes this was all elective stuff, but think about it to get TV crew in etc in normal hours would delay theatres, plus not really afternoon TV viewing.

Of course the Consultants were happy to come in at night. To actually want to do an Op on TV they have to be fairly egotistical. Worth getting to bed a bit later to be on TV
