Trying to figure out why the tv programmes on the CH4 app on my Sony smart tv are not Hd.
lad at work has a HD sign next to the shows on his but i don’t.

I’m logged in with my wifes CH4 account and it shows HD on the ipad app but just not on the TV.

any pointers?

Just tried the app on our LG TV and it doesn't display a HD logo anywhere but it's absolutely definitely in HD. I put on the Great British Bake Off or whatever the hell it's called.

Hope that might be of some help.

Possible it’s upscaling? Mine is not in HD when viewing it. Clear to see.

Now realised that the HD sign in on the iPad app is not highlighted but on my friends tv it is. So for some reason we just don’t have it in HD at all. Can’t quite figure out why!

Similarly on my LG TV it is HD but doesn't show an HD logo whilst playing content.

Weirdly though on the LG TV it doesn't do live streaming of channels/content whereas on the (older) Samsung TV it does do live streaming.

Very odd as I assume they're all effectively just web apps so should be pretty similar.

This LG is fantastic in HD and 4k but it can't upscale SD for shit. Lol

So it's definitely in HD on this TV anyway.

Smart TV apps are often shit.  You're ahead of me, my £1500 LG doesn't have the Channel 4 app at all.

I'd suggest a Firestick or similar.

Also,

Literally every TV ever made since we started calling them 'panels' rather than CRT fishbowls will "upscale."  If it didn't then you'd have a black border around the picture taking up three quarters of the screen.

Depends on the age of your Sony TV I guess and how good they are with updates. We have different versions of the apps on different TVs here. Some don't exist, some don't do the live stream etc. Solved with a dedicated streaming box/stick. Never seen HD on the screen though, or is that a feature of the TV?

Odly, my Ch4 app on my smart Sony TV appears to play in HD, but the Ch4 app on my BT box seems to run on SD.

Takes ages to bump the quality from “Blurry Mess” to “Marginally Acceptable” on my Philips TV with a 500mb internet connection. I think the app is just terrible (Android TV). The irony is that you could probably download the entire episode from a torrent site in full HD in less time than it takes to load the Channel 4 app, and that’s before the adverts.

I emailed the help section on the ch4 app and they responded:

“Currently HD content on Channel 4 streaming is only available (rights permitting) through Sky on Demand.  Where no HD version is available, programmes will be available on standard definition. We do hope to provide HD content across our other platforms at a later date”

Thanks stox.  Not the best answer we could have had, but at least we now know.

Well, that's annoying. So we can't get C4 HD streaming 'cos C4 and Sky have some exclusivity deal they've agreed?

The F1 qualifying did look pretty ropy on our cheap TV upstairs yesterday.
