I quite like a hefty cereal bar - an after ride snack or just a snack generally. I find the ones that are high in protein (and lower GI) do a better job at keeping hunger at bay.

I have a few regulars but my choice in the supermarket is limited. Anyone have any good recommendations.

I normally buy 9bars or nakd/Trek bars.

I've seen a few more come on the market such as Pulsin, Paleo bars and bounce. Are there any crafty secret alternatives that would be similar but have less marketing cost added on.

I am specifically looking for prepackaged things that are convenient to travel with and don't go off or spoil.

Protein bars?

Taste like cardboard soaked in newquick, but very filling.

I should add in that case that they need to be nice. Some of the protein bars are ok but they are expensive for what they are.

Clif Builders Bar are high protein, and quite tasty. Maybe not cheap, though you can buy a box of 12 from Chain Reaction for £20.

Nature Valley are now doing Protein bars - 8.5g per 30g bar. Peanut and Chocolate so nicer than your average "sports" bar. No idea about GI though.

Make your own

1 cup rolled oats
1 cup unsweetened peanut butter
1 cup chocolate protein powder (I prefer isolate, and you can experiment with different flavours or use unflavoured and cocoa powder).
1-2 tablespoons of unsweetened apple sauce or mashed up banana (optional)
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon (optional)

Mix well, add a splash of milk if the mixture is a bit dry. Spoon out into a lined baking tray, level off and bake for around 20 mins at 180c. Take from oven allow to cool, cut into 10 bars. You can experiment around the basic recipe.

Finally hope you have some left by the time you next go riding.

Lots of recipes to make your own, only tried once right enough but was dead easy and much cheaper than buying from a shop.

😉

I'm not a massive fan of protein and whey powders - they tend to have adverse effects.

Musclefood's own brand ones - 20+g of protein in each one, low gi carbs, no sugar.
Far cheaper than any of the "brand" ones.

I'm a bit addicted to MyProtein oats and whey bars. Low GI, a decent bit of protein, quite substantial, and the chocolate chip one tastes ok. Not too expensive as they've usually got some sort of deal on. Not sure how good they are for you though (Mrs B calls them my fart bars, make of that what you will!)

Really want to start making my own though.

Why the high protein?

I like 9bars and Nakd bars for things like this, or just straight up nuts. Eat Natural ones I find a bit sweet or too full of puffed rice

Why the high protein?

Wasn't looking for muscle building levels. Main reason is that it actually makes me feel full. Certainly the Trek bars do a much better job of satisfying hunger than an equivalent generic flapjack. I generally just tent to go for nutty stuff if there is no alternate.
