When it comes up with what do you feel is your nationality if you click OTHER the first suggestion that comes up is European.
Seems rude not to click on that.

Why? You're not sticking it to the evil tories or making some clever political point. You're just screwing up long term population data.

In what way?

Is the idea to find out whether people identify as European - British - [english/scottish/welsh/etc], could be some interesting results.

I'll be selecting European as a Brexit protest, but I will probably have long forgotten this by 2031, so my answer then will probably change.

The question in a section titled "National identity and ethnic group" is:
"How would you describe your national identity?"

The help guidance says:

"It's up to you how you answer this question. Select all the national identities that apply. You can select more than one.

Your national identity is what you think it is
Your national identity could be the country or countries where you feel you belong or think of as home. It's not dependent on your ethnic group or citizenship.

This question allows you to record an identity that isn't listed, if you want to."

ask me that question a while back and I would have said British, today! Inclined to put Irish in there I have little love for this country anymore. It provides me with a job and that's about it.

It provides a lot of people with jobs, lots of them Europeans (Continental Europeans as opposed to British Europeans)

My 82yo mother is somewhat miffed that it has to be filled in online. I’m sure she’s not the only one.

There must be thousands of elderly folk who are not computer literate, or not internet-savvy, or what have you.
Not to mention how many families don’t have access to a computer or t’internet because they can’t afford a broadband subscription.

Will all these people fall foul of some ‘failed to submit their census details’ “crime”?

While I agree a lot of older people won't like it,you don't have to do it online, theres a paper option.

RE the online challenges.

I was in Estonia that is the first fully online government for everything.

Everything, from birth certificate, to voting, tax, driving license, passport, benefits, everything is online.

They've put effort into support for those who need it, with broadband everywhere, access to the system in every public building you can think of.

According to the folk we were working with, it works well.

It's only a page long; about 15 sentences. Not a massive letter to read, but when I got mine two immediately obvious things to me were

1/ You can request a paper form at www.census.gov.uk or call 0800 141 2021

2/ All households should complete the census on Sunday 21 March 2021 or as soon as possible after.

Why are you doing it today, numpties.

Because Mrs Zip put it on my jobs to do today!
My sexuality, date of birth and job are unlikely to change in the next 2 weeks.

Ah that's a pity. Last time round it was just so clever and witty and really sticking it to them.

Torn up and binned, I'll wait till we get nagged. It arrived on a day I really couldn't be arsed to even open it.

Yes its being petty and it serves no purpose. I don't really care.

Sounds more like a question to the social scientists to pore over for the next decade, I imagine more than one PhD in it.

I imagine that more people will put Alderaan than European

Just had the letter. Leaflet with it says “ you can submit completed form before 21 March if you know who will be in your household on that day. If you submit before 21March but your circumstances change you can let us know”
So it seems they are comfortable with early submissions

Had the letter yesterday, not opened it yet. If it can be done online, so much the better. 🙂

European here, for sure.

Your £1000 fine will pay for pay rises for 6 nurses.

Or some curtains for Boris's flat.

Not sure what statement those who tear it up or make comedy entries think they're making? This isn't a Government thing, it's a society thing. The truths about society it reveals (i.e. how many identify as European before British) can send unwelcome messages to Government. Filling it in as a Jedi makes their job easier.

The census informs a huge amount of government provision, it's really quite important. In my previous role it provided part of the background data for housing benefit figures, let alone the obvious stuff around education, healthcare and other anticipated provision.

So the census dates in England and Scotland are different (whose bright idea was that). Does anyone know the situation for a student who would normally be in halls in England but will actually be back home in Scotland on the census date due to the pandemic? I always thought it was a form per household but do halls of residence count as a single household? Does she have to complete the census even though she won’t be in the country on the census date and her primary residence is in Scotland?

https://census.gov.uk/students says you complete it for your student address even if you're not there. Since, if you're not there, you won't have the letter, there's a link to request an access code.

Scotland's census isn't until 2022 so I would ignore that for now, she's a student in England so just follows the rules for England.

Would have gone straight in the bin as previous years, but after reading this thread I will do it and ensure I mark my nationality as English.

So, MIL is in a nursing home - could be tricky to complete for her due to covid.

I could fill mine in early as, unless a miracle happens, I know I shall be at home alone on 21st March.

Satanism is in the list, if you're feeling like a bit of an edgelord.

Or a dark lord

If it's her normal place of residence, I assume the care home know what the guidance is
