Every year my neighbour buys them for their child. They all take great glee in letting them go from the garden.
In the prevailing winds oh how they soar, way up towards our glorious country side, to litter yet another farmer's field, forests, woods or moors.
In the past I've tried to grab them.
However this year it got caught in their own little tree and the bunch of 7 bobbled over our fence for a day.

Now it seems that every sad event (I know I'm heartless), seems to have crowds of people letting these shiny littering monstrosities flying up into the wind.
Surely there is another more environmentally friendly way to celebrate or commiserate.

Bunnyhop - who is sick of seeing these things littering our precious countryside.
Ban them.

Agreed, it's just flying (non bio-degradable) litter.

Plus, there is a finite supply of helium on the planet, and there are much better uses for it than putting it in a balloon.

See, also, Chinese lanterns.

Totally agree, I regularly find them tangled on fences up on the South Downs round Brighton. They seem to be indestructible too under normal environmental conditions.

TBH I would say that littering due to helium balloons contributes to the overall littering/pollution problem by a fraction of a percentage point. So if that's going to annoy you, you should be a whole lot more annoyed at the rest of the litter.

Such as the scumbags that throw cigarette butts out of their car windows.

Each balloon is an angel waiting to hatch.
As soon as they get near heaven they emerge from their pupa and that then falls to earth.

Seems to be a something that is thankfully falling out of trend.

Hahaha! Zippykona.

It’s still shit.

They are annoying TBH, so feel some of the angst you’ve mentioned.

I’d be happy to see them banned from sale, wasn't there an initiative to get them banned a few years ago?

Ahh, knew I’d read it somewhere..

Agreed, but it's just one type of littering in a huge ocean of it. I guess it is different in that the people that do it won't see it as littering.

Yes it's a teeny portion. However I detest all forms of littering.
These balloons can be seen from outer space when caught in the sun.

I say this with genuine respect for the lovely OP, but I can't see a problem in the grand scheme of benefit for the individual V environmental impact.

It'll be a sad day that this is banned, whilst almost limitless capitalist ventures carry on causing the real environmental damage.

Hate it, and all other types of littering.

Hoping that if I ever need an MRI scan there will be enough Helium left!

The actual amount of helium put into the balloons is very small.
Its actually grossly contaminated with air and thus can't be used in applications where high grades of purity are required (such as MRI scanners)

Have to agree that I struggle to see why people feel the need to let these things go, whats the point ????

Littering gives you an incredible rush, just try it next time you're in a busy street. Can't begin to imagine what it must feel like to fly tip.

It's up there along with the memorial tat left on top of mountains and other beauty spots in the list of things that annoy me much more than they should.
