Have Googled my way round this but information is inconclusive.

I'm after an outdoor 'safety' camera to monitor the garden but it needs to have sound activated recording as well as motion activated.

This doesn't seem to be a common feature, so hopefully the never-failing STW hivemind can help...

- Anyone got a Wyze camera? Does it work correctly in the UK (ie. outside the US)? Have you tried sound activated recording on it?

- Anyone with a Google Nest camera/doorbell. Apparently some subscription levels unlock sound activated recording on some setups. Anyone got it to work?

Anyone know of any other cameras that have this feature and aren't ridiculously priced?

TIA.

My classic Nest doorbell does this. I turned it off because it doesn't take much to start recording, though that might be what you want, of course!

What is the actual problem you're trying to solve? There's probably a good reason most cameras don't have this feature, most likely that it's not particularly useful given a lot of environments are very noisy so it would be detecting all the time (as above!)

Longer term just something we can use as a general security camera.

Immediate issue (in true STW fashion) is that an anonymous neighbour has complained to the council about our dog barking and they have had a council audio recorder installed. We'd like some counter-evidence (since we know it's not our dog - the complaint ignores the 3 noisy yard dogs one immediate neighbour has and the yappy cockerpoo the other side of us). Currently have a motion triggered camera installed but obviously that only sees movement. We're getting some useful footage but we'd like noise triggered to catch the barking from over the fences while our mutt sits there not reacting.

Easiest/cheapest thing might just be record 24/7, detect dog barks separately, and use that log to help pinpoint the useful video?

I know that recent iPhones/iPads can detect dog barks, as can Alexa devices, pretty sure I read Google phones can too? Or just stick a microphone out the window connected to a laptop, I expect there’s some free sound detection software out there somewhere!

I could do audio only easy enough, but ideally want the link between video and audio to demonstrate it's not our dog. Audio only could be (wilfully) misinterpreted.

Ah. Assumed your camera recorded audio also, just couldn’t detect sound levels/audio events.

Sorry, yeah. Current camera does record audio too, but recording is triggered by motion only. Would like something that record both but can be triggered both either motion and noise.

The first stage of a noise complaint is to install a recorder to verify the level of noise. If the council decide that a noise nuisance is apparent they will then try to identify the source and if other dogs are barking then they will take account of all of them. The fact that the neighbour specifically complained about your dog seems a bit odd if there are other dogs barking as well -  in any case it's irrelevant as noise is noise from whatever source. It maybe that the neighbour thinks it's your dog but the noise recorder is just the first stage to verify if it's a nuisance or not. After that they try and find out where it originates so the yappy dogs will be included.

You may need continuous recording so you can go to a specific time/date which means a proper CCTV system rather than a Nest/Ring type standalone camera.

@oceanskipper Thanks (sounds like you have some involvement in these things - or have been on the wrong end of one in the past!).

Just feels that we've been 'targeted'. When we called the council to discuss the letter they sent us they were able to describe some very specific things about our jobs and the dog's situation, but were completely unaware that both neighbours also have dogs.

I know about it because one of my neighbours bought a cockerel which did what cockerels do every morning at sunrise and then continued most of the day. I couldn’t pinpoint which neighbour exactly. The bylaws prohibit livestock, chickens etc and I rang the council. They were very helpful and offered to install a sound recorder etc etc. They drove round for an hour trying to locate it and after that it went away, thankfully! A letter sounds a bit formal though and your council may well be a bunch of incompetent fools so your experience may differ from mine!!!
