We moved into our house a year ago and it has a Hikvision NVR, which ive hooked upto the LAN so I can view from my phone, there are two really good cameras out the front, but the back one that works is very poor quality and the 4th has no signal at all.
Happy to try replacing the cameras myself (they’re the dome ones but aren’t HD quality) as one has a huge amount of glare on the corner which must be from the camera as there is no light out the back.
Just wondering if they’re as simple to replace or whether a CCTV engineer would be better?
I would have thought it would be simple enough as the cable is already run, I guess you need to double-check the replacement camera is compatible with the NVR. I was advised to buy a turret rather than dome as they need cleaning less often (and less likely to get spider webs over them), mine's been fine for over a year.
I bought my Hikvision system from https://www.use-ip.co.uk/
Helpful people and their own web forum for advice. If you tell them what you have now they should be able to recommend a compatible replacement. Make sure you get the right focal length to the get the field of view. Glare can sometimes result from having two cameras looking towards each other, if they have IR lighting.
I got a cheap set of sannce 5mp hd colour cameras they are great, they have a night light on them and while its not super bright to annoy the neighbours the images are like daytime at night
Assuming they're POE cameras, probably worth getting a network cable tester (£5 on Ebay etc) to rule that out with the dead camera (useful tool anyway!)
Loads of resources on the web re. IP cameras, ipcamtalk.com is a good one, warning: it's a pretty deep rabbit hole 🤣
Annke get decent reviews at the moment, quite cheap on Amazon, apparently some models are re-branded versions of more expensive brands! 1080P is probably fine for most purposes, if you need to see faces or read plates for security then maybe 4K. However night-vision is a whole other kettle of fish, often lower-res are better for night, if that's the priority then look at cameras with great night performance first (they tend not to be cheap though!)
I've got a spare dahua 59225 hni I'm thinking of selling? As I've upgraded some of my kit, this is still capable of counting how many nose hairs the perps have at about 150m in the dark 👌

zilog6128 are these ok for self install As I've been looking at some of the hikvision ones but was told it would need to be professionally installed. Cheers

That’s more to do with the dealer network - hikvision are pro install only, the suppliers in the uk have to log all sales and they’re trade only. I’ve been struggling to get anything myself, annoying as I want to match the alarm as it all runs on one app.
as long as Hikvision allow you to use generic IP cams with their NVR then yes they'll be fine!zilog6128 are these ok for self install As I’ve been looking at some of the hikvision ones but was told it would need to be professionally installed. Cheers
APPARENTLY some Annke cameras are mechanically identical to Hikvision, just running different firmware... and you can flash them with the Hikvision firmware to make them totally identical! This isn't something I know anything about tho so you'd have to do some research!
The cameras are actually POC as far as I can tell, before I start investigating. At the NVR end they’re coax terminated so have to be coax I think, still quality should be good from it if the front cameras are to go by... as it’s been stated at night the only issue as the IR sensor actually blanks out numberplates! Not ideal! Interesting thought about the IR knocking the other one out, Funnily when we came to view the house that camera did work. So I think it shouldn’t be too bad to fix. I’ve seen hikvision poc cams so I’ll probably keep with those to avoid continuity issues.
You have to run a camera with a long exposure time and high frame rate for numberplates at night, I have a dedicated camera for this.
I only run it @1.3mp as doesn't need to be HD either.
Ipcamtalk.com is a good source of information, hikvision are available anywhere online, I have a mix of dahua starlight and hikvision dark fighter cameras running through an old gaming pc using sighthound cctv software with 3x2tb hdd.
Its a pretty trick set up, built over a few years.

Thanks that's what has confussed me as I've had a look at the systems available on ebay etc and even contacted my local guy and had been told there was no Hikvision system that I could home install. Sounds like it is just talk to try and increase installs. because I can't see it being to difficult to DIY?
First thing is to test the cable. Replace the BNCs to rule them out.
Maybe test the camera on a short coax at the DVR to prove the camera.
Settings to adjust capability of recognising number plates is done in the camera menu. Preset 95 normally on a Hik. Always better setting up at night as can see real time results, especially with number plate reflection. Day results don't really matter apart from setting frame rates etc.
Always go for cctv from reputable wholesalers, never ebay/ amazon etc. Firmware updates etc will not work on Grey market equipment.
Hik is a good starting place for professional cctv and is plug and play to a certain point.
Like everything, we could all probably repair a pipe, build a wall, but.
Have a look for hilook cameras , they are consumer grade hikvison products and will work with a hik NVR
