I've got a burner which is recessed into a fireplace, and a couple of kittens are arriving next month. I'd rather they didn't find out about it by jumping on top and simultaneously burning their feet and being hit by the stove fan...

All I can see online are 'cage' type fireguards - what I'm after is a flat mesh panel with a hinged door in the centre so I can hook it on over the recess and still open it up to feed the burner now and then.

Anyone know of such a thing? Would need to be about 1m by 1m20.

Any sort of mesh will block some of the heat radiating out of the stove and are really only to stop sparks and bits of flying coal burning the house down. You could buy mesh and make something, or I'm sure the cats will work it out.

How about a few of this sort of thing:

Use scarier ones when the kittens get older and bolder. You're welcome.

Picture of dog, or just keep dog tied to burner?

By mesh I just mean a grille to keep inquisitive cats from passing through, rather than a really tight mesh. Sparks aren't a problem.

Our puppy learnt about our wood burner with one brief nose sizzle.

How long did you hold him against it? 🙂

Don't under estimate the intelligence of your new feline [s]overlords[/s] friends..
Our two like to melt in front of the stove, but they've never actually tried to jump on it when it's lit..
The Staffie did a nose sizzle but that's cos he's pig as shithick..

we had one kitten take the 'hot route' over the burner, it was an insane feline but never did it again.....none of the others did nor our dogs but all did like to melt like surrealist drawings around it

Hmmm our dogs cook themselves in front of ours till they are verging on heat death before going into our near zero conservatory to cool off on the stone floor (and repeat all night apart from episodes of eating and barking at the fox).

The ferrets on the other hand......

Every hot coal that falls out must be investigated to see if it is whisker meltingly hot and the poker even if its come out HOT must be rubbed on to distribute soot all over said ferret before soot is deposited on furniture (preferably white or cream) when ferret sneezes......

Yeah - our cat was no problem with the fire, she does tend to get herself too hot to touch (as in painfully hot to touch) and then decide to jump on your lap!

The dog on the other-hand has burnt her nose many multiple times and was once stood there looking at us with her tail dangling against the fire, and for some reason didn't connect the smell of smoke to her tail being where it was!!

I knew a cat who did that. They're not as intelligent as they think they are.

I never like to overestimate the intelligence of any member of our household. Including myself.

I'm sure the cats will be cleverer than their slaves, though.

Just like my nephew who touched my motorbike exhaust, they will only do it once. The cat is currently sleeping under the burner which is glowing nicely.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Cats have a pretty good sense of temperature and won't go too near anything hot, Our two never get too close to the fire when it's burning.

Sorry, did you say you were trying to stop cats from getting in, or getting out?

Cats have a pretty good sense of temperature

Not when they're kittens, and pads are the first thing they'll use to investigate new things

Is there ever a bad time?

Anyhow, eyebrows were raised at the 'do nothing, it'll be reet' solution proposed by most here, so I'm still in the market for a nice cat-proof panel... 🙂
