Last month I was parked up at services and a woman parked in front of me and instead of applying her handbrake she decided to play with her dog. The car rolled into the side of my van at about 2mph but broke all the trim off down the lhs.
I put it through my insurance who took the van away to repair. They have now come back to say it's a Category N write off. They are going to pay me off but I get the van back as cosmetically damaged but driveable.
I can repair the van myself pretty easily but it will still be registered as Cat N so will have some effect on insurance presumably. Anyone any experience?

Not structurally damaged so probaly wont be too bad

A: Scrap
B: Break
S: Structurally damaged repairable
N: Non-structurally damaged repairable

It’s essentially the old cat d, changed this year. Will be a bit more expensive to insure it but maybe not, worth less to sell. Same rules apply, get a price to buy it back and work out of its right for you. You can ask the insurance for a quote at the same time to see but normally it’s cheaper to buy it back if your not fussed about it cosmetically.

They've said I can have it back, no charge.

Just to clarify.... the insurance is paying you and is also giving you back the van as well. Full payout?

Yeah, there's not a lot of money involved.

If it really is just the trim down the side, I'd suggest taking lots of photos of the van as it is, from every angle, it can;t do any harm if you come to resell it...

Note the van could be worth less because of the cat N status of the van, even once its repaired. So the extra payout on top of the van should be to address this issue and the damage and effectively put the OP back in the same position as he was before the accident.

Also try and document the repair process with photos and receipts etc to help assure the prospective buyer the repair has been carried out correctly. Although if its just the trim thats damaged this may not be too essential.

My BIL had this, he rear ended someone at low speed. Cat N write off, offered him £2850 for it, heasked if they could let him keep the car, so they paid him £1800 and he kept the car.
I replaced the bonnet (£80) last weekend from a scrapper (same colour), just needs a headlight and its sorted. Its a 13 yo Audi A4 Avant 1.9TDI which he only uses a couple of times a week, so he's quids in!

(Wish someone would do this to my Scenic)

I don't think the OP is that bothered about resale value.

They are asking about the effect on their own insurance.
