I had the cataract removed from my right eye on Thursday and a new lens put in.I was feeling a little apprehensive before the procedure but it was totally painless and all over in about 15 minutes. The difference is quite frankly astonishing between my sight before and after and I cannot wait to get the left eye sorted.

Cheers.

Great to hear! My dad had similar, one, then the other, and it was properly life changing!

I was at their house about a week after and walked into the kitchen to find him furiously scrubbing the sink. Turns out that he was trying to scrub the sink they'd had for 10 years clean, as he hasn't previously been able to see the mottle in the ceramic finish...

Mate of mine had it done.  Said he'd never look back.

Both my parents have had cataracts done, and it's been a huge improvement for them (in their 80s)

I am quite squeamish, especially with eyes, and I'm terrified that I'll need it done at some point, but if I can survive a vasectomy with not enough anaesthetic, how can it be worse?

I had both eyes done when I was 45. Early onset cataracts probably caused by steroid asthma inhalers.

I went private to get multi focus lenses and had them done on the same day to save a bit of money on surgery time.

It was a very intense day; 2nd eye wasn’t fun because I had to keep the 1st open after it had been operated on.

Apart from a little bit of laser treatment afterwards it all went well and I have fairly good eyesight. Not great in low light when I need to see detail but phones have torches so it’s never too tricky.

Glad to hear your op when well OP.

That's terrible, the surgeon should get the sack.

Badum, tish!

Back on topic, I developed cataracts which got worse fairly rapidly, to the point that driving in the dark was becoming dangerous. I was lucky and was able to get my first eye, my right, done very quickly due to a cancellation, my left I had done about three months later, the difference was unbelievable, I only need reading glasses for very close up purposes, to be able to manage without otherwise for the first time in around fifty years has been a life changing experience.

He knew he hadn't used enough anaesthetic a millisecond after I found out....

Good to hear- I was told last week I had one developing (I’m 57, thought I was too young to get them) so been a bit peeved.

Also don’t like the idea of having eyes chopped about- especially under a local.

Recently I started to get fuzzy vision a few years after cataract surgery so went to the opticians.  The lens capsule had thickened which is not uncommon so got a referral to a NHS eye hospital.  I was seen within a week for an assessment then had the procedure the following week which was 30 seconds of laser zapping and totally painless.  Super impressed with that part of the NHS.

Apart from the infamous extension operation by the Chinese private medical group Hunglo, there's no other surgeries that can turn back the years like a cataract op. Highly recommend.

If anyone is interested in going private, either for a wider choice of lenses or other reasons, I can highly recommend Bruce Allen at Moorfields Private (London). Did an excellent job on my eyes!

When my mother had it done recently I looked into it to find out what's involved. The image on the Wikipedia article amused me.

In the surgeon's right hand: "temporal approach phacoemulsification probe"

"Wow, fancy stuff. Sounds like a sonic screwdriver. Obviously highly technical precision stuff wot I don't understand."

In the surgeon's left hand: "chopper"

😱
