Just moved into a house where the previous owners had a cat, we cleaned the carpets today and it seems to have activated a strong smell of cat piss. The smell was already present in the garage and loo downstairs.
Any tips on how to get rid of it? We will be getting rid of the carpet at some point but would like to keep it down for a bit if possible.
I had a quick look online and some people suggest white vinegar, there are some specific piss odour removal products online but reviews are mixed.
The stronger stuff could ruin the carpets so be carefull
Is it a rental?
Have you tried Sudocrem?
No, not a rental.
Lynx Africa, applied directly to carpet, 1 can per 2m2.
Hire a carpet cleaner (rug doctor type thing) or buy a Vax carpet cleaner...?
We used to have a nervous cat who would spray anywhere and everywhere. You will struggle to get rid of the smell IMO. It's disgusting and seems to resist all attempts at cleaning away.
We have tried everything but the one thing that works is Mr muscle oxyclean.
Thought this was about Fosters lager.
Dissypointed.
Piss on it yourself to establish ownership, or the cats will just come back.
We had an elderly cat who took to relieving himself at random in his last few weeks.
when he died I started cleaning the carpets. Vax machine, mix of Vax & Rug Doctor pet urine detergent.
I’m working away at the moment, could smell it strongly when I came home on a Friday night, but several passes with the above combination seems to have got rid of the worst of it. Still smells if you get close enough to the worst area, but medium term plan is to replace all downstairs carpets with wood flooring. Not planning to sell the house any time soon so I can live with it.
mrs_d doesn’t notice it as she’s not away as much as I am

People s****, but this really does work.
Pick up a few dog eggs from the pavement and tread those in.
There's an enzyme spray you can get from pet shops.
Thanks for all of the comments, after a bit more investigation it seems that some kind of enzyme cleaner is the correct way to try to eliminate the smell (as suggested above).
Just change the carpets.
It's the only sure way. Unless it's soaked into the floorboards too...
Is it urine on the carpets or male cat scent-marking spray on the walls and furniture? If the former, clean and allow to dry. If the latter, wash about a foot high around door frames and furniture with hot detergenty water.
New carpets Job done
