Recently moved house with our 14 year old mog.

She's settled in well and seems very happy in the new environment, though her eating habits seem to have changed:

In the old house we used to feed her one or two sachets of wet food per day, topped up with a few biscuits.
We suspect she was being fed by a few of the neighbours too, as she's a bit of a tart.

Since we've moved she's eating the same amount of wet food, but a lot more biscuits.
She's started drinking water from her bowl too, which is the real worry, as she didn't really bother much before.

Should we be worried about the increased water consumption?
She's not lost weight and I'm inclined to put it down to the decrease in wet food, increase in dry food and/or the removal of a water supply at the old place we weren't aware of.

What do you reckon?
Vet time or see how it goes?
I'm worried about her having kidney probs, especially at her age.

I expect you're correct. She was stealing food from someone else. It's the nature of cats.

Plus, they often have outside drinking places they prefer to the chlorine tasting water you put out for them so she might not have found a better place to drink yet. Our cat drinks where I take a crap, again, it's in their nature.

Which is a logical. A blood test carried out by your vet will answer that question - I pay £35 for the test (but I could be getting it cheap)

Kidneys/Liver/Thyroid spring to mind. May be worth a vet visit. It could well be normal but I would always check if we suddenly start to see a cat drinking where before we never noticed.

If she's eating more dry biscuits then she'll need more water!

Is she going outside at your new home as much as she used to at the old place? If she isn't then less puddle etc drinking opportunities.

I feed my cat just on dry biscuits (vet's recommendation) and always make sure that she's got plenty of water. My kitty gets through about a pint of water a week, maybe more in the height of summer or winter (radiator hugger). I give my cat bottled water as she's a bit precious about the tap water. But as female cats are a bit more prone to cystitis, which she's had a couple of times already, getting the bottled stuff from Lidl works out cheaper than the vets bill!

One of our cats started drinking more water than normal, he was also wanting fed every time we moved around the house. Even though he was eating more he was loosing weight at a fairly alarming rate. At first we just though it was due to him getting old (14 years old) but when we started to feel his spine we decided to get him checked over by the vet. Turned out he had a thyroid issue. Some medication and an operation later he is right as rain again 🙂
