I had a new fence installed and a local cat is using it as a scratching post. The claw marks are deep and if it continues the upright will need replacing in about a month or so. Is there anything I can do to keep it off? I was thinking of creosote but not sure.

Tie a cucumber to it.

Cats are terrified of cucumbers

Bit hard to tie a cucumber to a cat though.

What kind of cat lives next door that will wear down a fence post in a month in month a lion?

Set the fence on fire and get a bastard life.

Not sure it will go in a month but cats can wreck fence posts. Ours did it to our own fence years ago. Shredded the outside of a post. Maybe a metal cover thin galv or maybe thin wire mesh around the post. If not you can buy chemical deterrents, don't know how good they are though.

Yes that should do for that cat.

It'll have a lovely finish.

stumpyjon- what are these chemical deterrents? Do they paint on and how do they work?

We have a garden that we keep our guinea pigs in and everyone else seems to have a cat that comes and sits on the run and watches them. The run is wooden so if these chemicals can be painted on and only effect cats then I'm interested. We can't use one of those supersonic cat scarers because it'll also scare the pigs, and we don't have a water supply for a motion activated sprinkler.

Our cats have been using our sofas as scratching posts for years and they're still standing. I'd recommend not using cheese as a fence post material...

It's not the post, it's the uprights attached to the horizontals. Each one is about 25mm thick and the claw marks are now 4-5mm deep. I've not identified the culprit so can't attach a cucumber to it.

Just staple a bit of chicken wire round the post, that'll make it no longer attractive to the cat. However cross you get don't go all Woody on its ass.

Edit - oh, not the posts. You'll need quite a bit more chicken wire or a cleverer idea then.

You need a cat scanner.

Get a dog? Tie it to the fence, leave it outdoors and ignore the incessant barking

Tie a hungry terrier to it. That’ll sort the car once and for all.

You'll need a funnel. It makes the water balloons easier to fill.

Apparently.

You can buy a bottle of Pet Behave spray from pets at home for about £3,you'll need to spray the post a couple of times but it won't take long before they're out of the habit

Stumpy was nearly there, the mesh or metal needs hooking up to mains electricity for a proper job.

Chicken wire, or even foil would work to stop it being nice and attractive to scratch.

The cat repellant stuff is usually either mint or orange scented stuff (ground up dried orange skins etc). We tried it in the garden and it kinda works, but they just go and shit somewhere else instead.

Currently re-doing the garden and will be planting a lot of coriander, mint, lemon balm, curry plants etc to hopefully put them off.

I don't dislike cats, I just dislike the fact it's socially acceptable to have them in built up areas and allow them to shit everywhere.

Get a cat. It'll hopefully see off the intruder. Or failing that it will go shit in their garden, but not yours.

Of course it might scratch the fence as well.

I hear they don’t like lemon juice. Perhaps fill a super soaker with some ?

Don't plant mint in the ground, it grows and spreads like a bastard and really hard to get rid of.. Put it in a pot or a planter.

I had this, except the cat was shredding the bark of young apple tree.

I'm not allowed to shoot cats so I got a tub of tree grease and applied it liberally, also works to stop cats on fence tops.

It's actually to monitor for fruit flies but is non toxic and cats hate it on their paws.

6ft fence boards are like £2.30 each (I just bought a load). Surely it'd be easier just to replace a couple of damaged boards every once in a while?

Serious suggestion (sorry)

They love rough-sawn timber, such as fence post, but if it's smooth timber they struggle IME. I recently installed quite a large raised bed made out of smooth decking boards, in a house that has two cats that happily destroy every other bit of rough-sawn timber (inlcuding fence posts) with their nail sharpening antics.

They tried on the decking raised bed, I watched several times, but their claws couldn't get any purchase at all and remained intact 🙂

So they just shit in the raised bed instead 🙁

Wrap it in zinc or a different timber? Site a sacrificial post nearby?
Plant something spiky beside it? Help prevent burglary in the process?

Find out if you have a Mumm-Ra living nearby. Cats can’t stand them and will spend pretty much every waking minute trying to thwart its schemes. This means they won’t have time to damage your fence post.

Get an e cat, real cats hate them as they’re not for real cat owners, block the flower beds, get all the C.O.Ms on catstrava etc
