"Mods leave the bad words for effect please"

I'm ****ing sick of people in my local town on a night out using such pearls of absolute "I'm not racist but...." wisdom.

That darky

The **** shop

He's not from round here

"They" all act/drive/upset people like that

I have to put up with it day in day out at work, I've just been to see my mate, best pizza in town, he's ****ing iranian  ffs and has no actual right to cook good pizza in your world.

Just makes me a bit sad, had to get it off my chest.

Some things aren’t inherently racist, just part of a human tendency to shorten or abbreviate words, like referring to the **** shop. An ex-g/f used to mention that the family would be having chinky and curry as part of a get-together; she’s half-Chinese, her mum’s Chinese. Are you going to call them out for being racist?

Bloody builders!

Coming over here with their opinions about casual racism........*

Edit : Apologies- I’m just in from a night out with my mate, Dr Dave, I may also be somewhat ****ed.

Unless the shop sells ****stani's then I think you are part of the problem that is being referred to.

You can challenge this language

you don’t have to socialise with people you don’t like/who are racist

you can move

Some people just look for things to be upset about - and get upset if they can’t be found.

Every bunch of roses includes the odd prick.

If your too embarrassed to be obvious of or find moving house an extreme measure, you can employ less than subtle measures.  A fixed gaze of subtle dissaprovement with a slight pause before responding, not responding and so on can be used to communicate discomfort.

When I hear “I’m not racist but….”, I like to finish the unsaid bit for them "Butt?... you're an arsehole?"

It's been all week with the tarmacing gang as most of the lorry drivers have been Asian. What makes me laugh more than anything is how matey matey they are when they come time to sign the drivers ticket face to face, then in the next breath will be saying "****ing useless ****" etc.

Crikey, sounds like the 80’s where you are! I’m with poly.

Wherever I have worked ,if anyone has made a racist comment I have challenged and advised them not to make it again within my earshot. Coming up to 15 years without any disparaging comment.(probably a few behind my back)

Where I live you sometimes get the odd mental health case being angry at the bus stop.

From my limited experience so far I’m delighted my son is growing up with friends of all ethnicities. He knows more about geography @5 than I did at 16! 🙂

Here is a question. Is Racism just an obvious form of Tribalism?

All human animals are tribal. We live in family units first and foremost and then build social circles around work, interests, sport, musical tastes etc. If you are in my tribe then I will stand up for you against someone from another tribe, whether I know you well or not. Cases in point

Chelsea vs Man United

Mods vs rockers

Cyclist vs motorists

Straight vs gay

Speak my language vs speak another language

Look like me vs look different to me

etc etc ad infinitum

Many of us have learned to control our tribal instincts by education and travel, though I suspect that, deep down, each and every person still has a certain degree of prejudice and or preference towards certain tribal groups, whether openly expressed or not.

Is not racism just the most extreme form of open tribalism. It seems to me that some of the most racist people I have socialised with are/have been the rank and file military, ie. those who may be called on to sacrifice themselves for the "tribe" they claim to defend.

It's not just here it's everywhere in small/medium towns. I do think at times it's just sheer ignorance.

I have lads from all over the country working on site and I just think its endemic in the industry.

Something I've noticed as well. Racism might well have many of it's roots, from a time when people had good reason to be wary of and have a need to defend themselves from those different from themselves.

It’s not really the words used, it’s the intent behind them.

i live in Scotland, it is common for people who are Scottish to be referred to as a ‘scot’, it’s an abbreviation of Scotland.

i doubt anyone would have issue with that.

you could say the same about someone who is from ****stan, it could be accurate and fair to abbreviate ****stan down to ****.

i’m going to assume that’s how the word **** came into existence.

however, ime, it’s not used as an abbreviation, or to describe someone who is actually from ****stan, (where it would at least be accurate), instead, it gets used as a casual and extremely lazy insult towards almost anyone with a decent tan.

I’ve called people out on racism and sectarianism a few times at work, there’s no need for it.

I will tell you a very short sad story, i used to go out with a lovely girl called anne, she was born in india, but raised by adoptive parents in the west of Scotland. She was beautiful, funny, pretty, but i knew I couldn’t take her home to my parents, my dad would have kicked me out on the spot for going with a ‘****’.

i don’t have much time for racists.

I think history shows that people have had reason to defend themselves from people that look exactly the same as them for millenia, so I don't think that argument stands up to much scrutiny.

I think this is the example you use every time?

If somebody suggested that was a phrase that shouldn't be used would she agree? Would it be a phrase you teach kids?

If you want a shortening of Shop run by a family from the Indian subcontinent how about Shop?

Would the same people offended by the above feel the same about gammon, ginger, speccy 4 eyes, fat boy etc. etc.   From what I've seen and observed is that it's ok to pull somebody up on an issue as long as it suits the masses or fits an agenda. But quite ok to turn your views to appease oneself or views.

What about?

Whatabout?

Whataboutery!

On your list..

Ginger - About peoples hair colour

Speccy - About Glasses

Fat - About body shape

All things that it's hard for somebody to change.

Gammon - about being a political shouty person who gets over exasperated trying to tell everyone what they think - So in my book that one is in.

https://twitter.com/AdamBienkov/status/995963867791609856

Alt right: “Snowflake! Cuck! Remoaner! Libtard! Beta! SJW! Triggered!”

Left: “Gammon!”

Alt right: “How dare you call people names!"

I think you’re wrong about why Scottish people are referred to as 'Scots' - the Roman/Latin name for some gaels was Scoti. Anglicised, that would be Scots, and where they live is Scotland.

So Scot is nothing like '****' and is not racist. The Pak in ****stan means pure and is not the name of a group of people.

No. of course not, because they aren’t remotely the same ffs.

From what I’ve seen and observed is that it’s ok to pull somebody up on an issue as long as it [s]suits the masses[/s] actually IS an issue.

Is it more about intent? I remember an angry man in the pub once calling me "Mate" and I will be honest, I don't think he wanted to be friends.

Senor J you make a good point about challenging racism. Then you undermine it by stereotyping people with mental illness.

Rather than asking for every situation why not just find out what people's names are and find a better way of describing them

This is the point iv'e been trying to make. Take trump for example, i think hes a buffoon, but i don't run to twitter to post about his baldness. The same people tweeting it are the first protesting at a lbgt rally about equality. Hypocrisy suits when the shoe is on the correct feet. I get called a paddy at least 3 times a week. I don't go to the press about it, because then again i am a white christian male, the lowest denominator and most evil sector of humanity.

I would suggest, if it bothers you then do something about it.

If it doesn’t bother you, then don’t.

But don’t presume that just because you are/aren’t bothered about it, everyone else who is put in a similar position feels the same as you.

They are allowed to complain about it, just like you are if it bothers you.

MP Paddy Ashdown’s real* name is Jeremy. He was called Paddy at school because he was Irish. Other Irish don’t like being called Paddy cos it’s racist, though most hate the British. Prejudice is a funny thing...

Hey gordimhor, sorry to have offended you. Would you agree that it’s fair to say, that somone standing at the bus stop screaming racist obscenities & shadow boxing is likely to be suffering from a mental health issue?

I have my own mental health issues, which are never trivial.

Senor J you didn't offend me.

I wouldn't make any assumption of a connection between mental illness and racism. Roughly one in four of us will suffer mental illness at some time in our lives, the point being with such a large group suffering mental illness that group are very likely to be typical of the rest of the population. That is to say they're no more likely to be racist than anyone else.

As an aside I would say most people who have a mental illness are able to manage it and function pretty much like the rest of us.

i’ve never felt that being called a scot was a racial slur.

’scotch’ otoh, is a different kettle of fish,

Some racism seems more acceptable than others, witness David "he's got a pineapple on his head" Baddiel mouthing off about anti-Semitism on Frankie Boyle(*)'s show on Saturday.

(*) the ginger(**) man's Bernard Manning

(**) yes, I know
