One of my social media threads went like this earlier today...
PersonA: It's an Indian summer 🙂
PersonB: ****stani summer?
So, just how racist is that comment?
Currently I'm ignoring the fact that the Indians referenced in "Indian summer", are north American. And not from the Asian subcontinent, as PersonB assumes.
Not racist, at all. Not funny at all either.
Currently I’m ignoring the fact that the Indians referenced in “Indian summer”
Really? Everyday's a school day on STW...
PersonA: It’s an Indian summer
PersonB: ****stani summer?
PersonAorC: What do you mean ?
Isn't it Autumn?
A late summer is a nice summer, so can't see how it's racist.
87% of social media comments make no sense.
87% of such nonsense appears on instagram.
seriously, this offends you? ffs get a ****ing life.
Don't know if it's racist, but it's definitely not funny
Why even say it?
Maybe ask an Indian, Native American, or ****stani person what they think.....
****stani summer?
Partitioned from the main summer by a period of violent weather?
seriously, this offends you? ffs get a **** life.
This. Just enjoy the sunshine, sunshine. 🙂
Brittsommar in Swedish. Flabbergasted by the racist vitriol here

It’s neither casual nor racist. I’m offended by the misleading thread title. Bloody whitey blowing things out of proportion as usual.
Just bantz. Dry yer tears luv.
I was listening to an old Answer Me This last night where they were discussing the origins of the phrase Indian Summer.
It is / was in reference to the Native Indians in America who harvested their crops later in the year compared to the incoming Europeans. The Europeans stuck to the same harvest time they used in UK when they went over the pond initially.
Unless person a or b were ****stani its certainly a very ****ing odd thing to say and like the op if it was on my Facebook I'd be wondering what views the poster held and be considering giving them the boot.
I’d be wondering what views the poster held and be considering giving them the boot.
Words fail me..
Words fail me..
Yet you still type.
You would have a melt down if you worked in the building industry if offended by that. Not funny as above just a bit shit.
****stani summer?
Partitioned from the main summer by a period of violent weather?
😆
So, just how racist is that comment?
It’s clearly ignorant of the source, but racist? Only if you’re a hand-wringing middle-class Caucasian desperately looking for things to get offended about of behalf of people who couldn’t give a shit about it.
I don't think it's really racist, it's more just a total random nonsequitor.
Also, Peanuts.

You would have a melt down if you worked in the building industry if offended by that.
Well luckily for me I dont hang out with racists.
Mind you I'm not sure what from my post makes you think I'm offended. I just think its a bloody odd thing to post and it would make me wonder what views they hold.
Only if you’re a hand-wringing middle-class Caucasian desperately looking for things to get offended about of behalf of people who couldn’t give a shit about it.
I'll run it past a couple of ****stani work mates tomorrow...pretty sure they'd think it more than a bit odd at best too.
Always thought it was referencing India! 🤔
Don’t see it as racist to be honest mate.
It's global warming and we're all going to die.
Always thought it was referencing India! 🤔
Don’t see it as racist to be honest mate.
In the interested of clarity I dont think using the words indian summer is remotely racist but another person posting ****stani summer in response is odd at best
I was really put out when I got called a casual racist recently. I put lots of effort into my racism, to suggest it was casual was highly insensitive.
another person posting ****stani summer in response is odd at best
I wonder if it's possibly naive / ignorant?
Poster B was assuming Person A was being racist in saying "Indian summer" because they misunderstood the etymology of the term (not that it'd be inherently racist anyway and if it was then so would the real reference). Ie, rather than making a racist comment they were doing exactly the opposite, being reactionary and overly 'politically correct.'
Only if you’re a hand-wringing middle-class Caucasian desperately looking for things to get offended about of behalf of people who couldn’t give a shit about it.
Wow, someone is desperate to demonstrate how thick skinned he is. 😂
but another person posting ****stani summer in response is odd at best
Agreed, it's odd. But not sure how it could be interpreted as being racist, unless you're actually looking to be offended on someone else's behalf, however tenuously.
offended on someone else’s behalf
This kind of lazy use of English is more offensive than the comment in the OP.
I, like a_a, do think it’s a bit of an odd thing to post - the kind of slip-up a racist who’s quite skilful at hiding his or her racism might make. 😀
This kind of lazy use of English is more offensive than the comment in the OP.
zzzzz 😉
Yep, lazy.
if the response was "**** summer" it may have been more of a concern
wonder if it’s possibly naive / ignorant?

Hadnt thought of that, you might be right.
Agreed, it’s odd. But not sure how it could be interpreted as being racist
Its not but people who randomly bring race into things in some odd attempt at humour are often a bit racist. As I said if they were friends with me on facebook I might look a bit closer at their posts
See I'd be asking them what they meant, rather than speculating my ass off
Possible answers, all from slightly odd perspectives and some wrong-thinking but then I think we're agreed that is was a weird thing to say regardless of motivation:
Bantz, man - coz all darkies are the same, right ?
Well, I think ****stan's probably hotter than India and it's been bloody lovely here lately, hasn't it ?
Cricket ODI's - we've got ****stan coming next summer, after India this year
Nothing - There's literally nothing in my head right now. As usual
(as above "Why were you taking the piss out of Indians")
I reckon Pie is spot on.
NSFW (or probably here for that matter cos It'll 'upset' someone.
Why are all the gammons on here so hot for the idea that those that think its a bloody odd thing to say are offended or upset?
It's a German summer here, was 23 today in the swabian region.
I'd never twigged Indian Summer was North American despite discussing the weather with my Indian friend in Pune every week for the last 4 years. Now I come to think of it, the monsoon followed by a brief warm spell before winter doesn't fit with my mental image of Indian Summer.
The only thing I’m finding weird is people who think it’s an odd thing to post on Facebook. Everything on there is bloody weird, so it just fits right in. If anything Indian Summer is the ignorant bit due to it referencing people who aren’t Indian.
Anybody have a friend of Cherokee and ****stani ancestory they can ask? If anybody is going to have an interesting view on the matter it’ll be them.
gammons
Don’t resort to lame insults, you are not going to change the mind of the usual ignorant racists. They love this not quite racist stuff, gives them a chance to be dicks without the repurcussions 😜.
This Twitter post will give you a whole shitload of names from all around the world, including ‘Indian summer’, which I believe came from the Penobscot First Nations tribe:

This kind of lazy use of English is more offensive than the comment in the OP.
Why, exactly? It’s a far too common, Daily Mail-type response by some people, more often than not white and middle-class, taking an inoffensive remark, and blowing it up out of all proportion because they believe someone, somewhere, might be offended.
Me, I’m seriously offended by plenty of things that are genuinely offensive, like the examples of outright racism in everyday America, where a Black gentleman, looking after his white friends kids for the day, is tailed by some random woman who calls the police. But at least he didn’t get shot for a) being black, or b) being black and breathing.
My response to the original Fb comment, had I seen it, would have to roll my eyes and mutter ‘Seriously? How can someone be that dim?’ Then go and find something more engaging to occupy my time with. I haven’t bothered with Fb for over a year now, although I haven’t actually deleted it, I no longer engage with it, mainly because of this sort of nonsense.
Have a nice day. 🙄

I always thought it was a sub-continent reference from the old colonial days. Clearly I'm just thick.

Taken to a daft conclusion you may then say ****stani summer. Clearly I'm a closet/semi/outright racist. And thick.

Or maybe I just like to post crap puns and there was never any agenda.

Indian, Native American, or ****stani person
did they walk into a pub?
are you Jim Davidson?
I reckon Pie is spot on.
I reckon he’s guilty of ranting about people ranting and no better than those he seeks to deride. Although I guess if he didn’t he wouldn’t have got the clicks. So fair enough.
