Had a bit of an emergency that means we've had to move into a place with terrible tv reception, no wifi and just about enough phone data to stream.
It's a temporary situation so i'm not going to invest in whizzbangery. We have chromecast but that's no good without wifi.
Maybe my Google-fu is weak but the internet is throwing up heaps of suggestions that are not really helping (i'm pretty exhausted)
Can anyone suggest something straightforward that will enable my iPhone to cast direct to the 10-year old Samsung Smart TV (hdmi cable, wifi dongle)
Do you have a second phone? You could enable the hotspot on that and then you would have a WiFi network. Buy a cheap (relatively!!) older model Apple TV and then connect it to the hotspot. Then stream from your Apple phone.
Enable a hotspot on your own phone and link the TV to that. You need wifi as all casting does (as I understand it) is send the info to the dongle on what to stream using the wifi rather than actually streaming it it the dongle. The exception is when screen sharing but even then the two are communicating across wifi

But, as above, use your phone as a WiFi hotspot and stick a Chromecast on your TV.
Should do the job, but there is a slim chance you may need to use another phone as the WiFi hotspot rather than yours.
Yeah, it doesn’t work with one phone. Two would involve my wife’s phone, which means we’d both need to be in the house at the same time. Might work 90%, but not ideal when the kids get home before I do.
I don't know about Iphone but I can use my Sony phone to tether via BT, WIFI or USB cable. USB sounds like your best bet unless you get a BT or WIFI dongle to plug in to your TV, assuming it has a USB port.
Just get mobile wifi sim and router.
Unless your in deepest darkest puru (Wales) you should find a provider that's has 4g.
Just watch the data plans as it gets costly.

iPhone to Chromecast can be temperamental - the app has to support casting, and you need to provide the CCast with internet access for it to function (via some form of wifi with internet access - eg. phone hotspot).
I would probably look for an iPhone to HDMI cable (original ones appear to be about £30, knock offs about £15, but may not support required anti-copyright features) as this will remove a whole heap of complexity from the equation without breaking the bank. If you get an original one you could probably sell it afterwards and recoup some of the cost. Just search for all of the apps that you want to use to check that they support HDMI out.
Other option would be to tether a laptop to your phone, and use the TV as an external monitor via HDMI. That removes nearly all of the blockers and will let you use any web based streaming service.

Which is exactly what we've just been giving options for - and the OP already has a chromecast - all he needs is a [temporary] wifi network.
Just search for all of the apps that you want to use to check that they support HDMI out.

Presumably he means the data port to HDMI converters you get for USB and presumably Apple proprietary connectors.
my understanding is that CC doesnt cast from the device to the screen. It sends it to the internet, and the chromecast dongle connects up to match. so if you cast iplayer to the tv, the service sets up a mirror connection from the chromecast directly to the iplayer service (not your handset) and only takes the commands from your phone. You can disconnect your phone cant you, and iplayer will keep running on the chromecast?
The hdmi and dongle comments were just to indicate the tv is old but still has those functions if they are options that help.
Lightning to HDMI adapter is what I used before we got a smart TV that supported Disney+.
It should be possible with just one phone providing a hotspot. Setting up might be easier if you have two phones available for that step though - one to provide the hotspot, another to drive the setup - because afaik during setup the Chromecast broadcasts its own network for the pairing process.
On my own Android phone I did set up a new Chromecast out of the box with just that phone and no wifi. Note down your hotspot details in advance, then turn it off and start the setup. When it asks for the network, choose other, then enter the hotspot details. It won't connect but it'll store the details and complete the setup. Now turn on the hotspot and it all works. Can't see why the same process wouldn't work on an iPhone.
